Resuming on their way from Oldale Town to Petalburg City, not far behind Sylvester as he walked was the fellow trainer he had met up with in Route 101—Seth Kavanaugh. While he didn't have an exceptionally rare pokemon, he did prove capable when it came to battle, defeating Sylvester's Ponyta with his Shinx.
"So, what kind of pokemon do you want to catch? Ghost, fire, dark type? I'm curious." Hoping that Seth wouldn't leave him without an answer for long, they strolled deeper into Route 102, passing a bend in the trail and officially saying goodbye to Oldale Town as they left it in the past. "I want to catch some ice and water types, myself. Not a lot of luck so far, but I think I will find good fortune once I reach Dewford Town. Travel by water or pokemon is the only way in or out, that I know of anyway, so I think it's as good a place to start as any." Finally allowing an interval of silence from himself, Sylvester listened carefully for what Seth would have to say.
[ SETH ] "All of them." The quiet words came after only a short pause from the question. Seth really did want to catch--or at least study--all Pokemon everywhere. It was the goal driving him on this journey. So far he had only gotten one, and that was nowhere near enough. Sure, he had seen a few others, but only superficial information was available through such quick observations. If he were to truly find out more about these creatures, it would require capturing many, many Pokemon.
Seth wasn't doing much to keep up the conversation. Other than his somewhat fascinated words of grandeur, he was silent. One glance would tell you Seth was trying to take in as much information as he could, from what Sylvester was saying to the surrounding environment. Rushing through first Oldale and now the route made Seth uncomfortable; he wanted to take it all in, in his own time. He knew there was another route off of Oldale, one that didn't lead anywhere unless you had a good water Pokemon. What kinds of Pokemon were available there? Was it different than this route? He didn't know what else Oldale had to offer, either. While Seth understood the importance of getting through the routes quickly, it didn't jive with methods he would use when on his own.

He genuinely did not expect that kind of answer out of Seth, his brow rising out of provoked curiosity. "That's a lot of pokemon, don't you think?" Trying to reason with him, it wasn't that Sylvester was trying to dissuade him from this goal. No, he just wanted to break it down further to divulge as to why this was so important to Seth.
"I suppose if you were trying to research pokemon, I could understand. Otherwise, though, I'd think it a bit troublesome for one trainer to manage that many pokemon." Allowing his glance to vary between surveying the path ahead and observing Seth's responses, he knew it would likely be a quiet walk from here. Seth's attention seemed elsewhere, and Sylvester wasn't very great with small talk—or any kind of talk, for that matter. Socializing wasn't his thing.
[ SETH ] There was a quiet sound of assent from Seth at the fact that it was a lot of Pokemon. It really was. Who knew how long it would take him to learn about that many? Maybe he could look into other methods of research--though hands-on, meeting the Pokemon themselves, seemed the best and most exciting way to go about it. There were probably plenty of books on the great variety of Pokemon in the world and how to take care of them or their different uses and abilities. There was a staggering amount of things for Seth to learn, but by the legendaries did he want to learn it.
It was, however, starting to make him feel intimidated. He instead opted to continue the conversation. That doesn't mean he spoke up right away. His own motives weren't something Seth had really thought about. He wanted to study Pokemon, what more did he need to know. He supposed it would be a good introspective exercise to think about, though. "That's the best way to learn about them, isn't it?" It was the first argument that popped into Seth's head. After a second more of thinking, he started to let his mouth run on its own, "Pokemon are just so fascinating, and I'm dying to learn everything about them. I want to be a scientist--or maybe even a Pokemon Professor--someday, and you need to know lots about them for that, don't you? Catching all types of Pokemon would be the greatest achievement, ever." Seth didn't care about fame, he literally just wanted to know all there was to know about Pokemon. On top of that, he wanted to share the information he would gather and use it to better other peoples' lives. It was a staggeringly grandoise idea, but you don't get anywhere with small hopes, right?

"Yeah, I suppose you are right. And you seem young, so you'd likely have many years in you to study them all over Hoenn. But still, it would be a lot of work and time on your end. I don't know you well enough to say whether or not I think you have it in you." It wasn't intended to be rude, simply the harsh truth. They had only just met not long ago, and to be so certain about someone was unlike Sylvester.
"It's a worthy goal, though, don't let what I say bring you down. If it's truly what you want, and you're willing to go above and beyond to achieve that for yourself—then it's for you." Probably closer to the worst motivational speech ever than the best, Sylvester simply pressed on as they moved further through the route and towards Petalburg City. "Honestly, I wanted to be a champion growing up. Now I just want to challenge the gyms, train my pokemon, and maybe see what good I can do for the world." Another simple goal, though not as far-fetched as what Seth had in mind. Yet, that's what made Seth's dream much more promising if and when reached.
[ SETH ] It was the truth. And it was harsh. Seth had no way of knowing if he was capable of achieving his astronomical goals. It would take years, and near constant effort. How long would it take for his endeavors to benefit others? I mean, what would be the point if it didn't? Sure, learning was rad, but why do it if you can't use it. The last thing Seth needed to be doing this early on his journey was doubting himself. At least Sylvester tried to make up for his insensitivity. Seth would definitely do his best. That's all you could ask of anyone, right?
The gyms were on Seth's list of things to do. There wasn't really any other way to get through the region in an organized fashion. Everyone was after the gyms. It was an a system of goals set up for him (and many others) to follow which would get him around the region, letting him explore to his heart's content. "Going for the gyms? I'll race you to champion, heh." It wasn't the most sincere of challenges, but he wouldn't back down if Sylvester seemed serious about it. I bet the champion had some pretty powerful and rare Pokemon, too. Seth would get there eventually. It would just take a lot of work.

"Well, if that's your plan you certainly got your work cut out for you." Sylvester said, reluctant to really say much until giving the idea further thought. "I look forward to seeing how much you progress, but I already have the head start. If you do manage to catch up, though, then I would have to acknowledge your knowledge and prowess as a trainer." He went on, doing his best to encourage the boy without inflating his ego.
"You already have a good pokemon—one that listens to you well." that much was already certain. "But your Shinx was raised in captivity. The pokemon of the wild can prove quite troublesome. You'd be wise to choose which ones you capture carefully. Take their types into consideration as well. A ground pokemon would hurt your Shinx, so don't be reckless when out in the wild."
Now that they had hit another bend in the road, rather the path, Sylvester turned to see the large city breaking over the treeline ahead. "Ah, we're here. If you stick around the city for a bit maybe we'll bump into one another again. I have to go to on ahead, though, but I will be back. You can count on it." Barely allotting him any time to respond, Sylvester spared a subtle wave before resuming his way towards Petalburg City. With Seth on his hind, they would gradually make their way into the city limits, where many other aspiring trainers and vendors awaited. It was good to be back...
[ SETH ] All of a sudden, Seth was left on his own. Sylvester had gone ahead without him, leaving the boy to ponder his friend's words. Of course it would take a lot of effort and strategy for Seth to progress through the gyms. He would definitely need to start training up his Pokemon. It would take a lot of time, too, and he knew Sylvester would not take as long. Seth was more interested in learning about Pokemon and taking his time with them in the wild whereas his new friend was okay with breezing through the region. He would more than likely get to the famed Elite Four before Seth, but it was nice to think of them meeting up here and there at the gyms. Petalburg would be the first stop on that quest. Seth was disappointed that Sylvester wouldn't be hanging around; they likely wouldn't see each other for a while. "Yeah, I'll see you..." The goodbye drifted off with a halfhearted wave probably out of earshot of the older man.
With Sylvester gone, there was a city to marvel at. At his back was the forest of Route 102, but in front of Seth was the city of Petalburg. It was certainly bigger than Oldale and Littleroot, and Seth knew there was a gym here somewhere. He was sure plenty of trainers would be flocking here to challenge it and move on. Would Seth cut it? He stood there with a dumbstruck look on his face for a few minutes. He was feeling alone all of a sudden, and a little intimidated. It was clear what to do next, so Seth supposed he should get to it. Pulling himself out of the lull, the boy charged excitedly into the new city.
