"Broski, get over here. I'm getting cold." It was a few hours after sundown and night had crept up along Dmitri's team, so he was forced to settle in for the night just off the beaten path. He used a tree with mossy growth on the side as a pillow, and threw down a large sheet before plopping a sleeping bag down atop. All I need now is a pillow.
That was where Broski came in handy.
With some objections, Swinub migrated to the sleeping bag and allowed Dmitri to use him as a pillow. It seemed uncomfortable at first, but soon enough Broski was the first to fall asleep. He must be really warm and cozy. Such was not the case for Dmitri, whose body seemed more frigid with each passing moment. He tried curling up in a ball, which helped a little, but woke Broski back up with a sharp snort. Crap, now he's going to put up a fuss.
"Sorry buddy, I'm just trying to get comfy."
The night seemed to come alive around them, pokemon making sounds he never heard before. It almost frightened him, to be out here all alone without even a fire burning. Definitely need to consider capturing a Fire-type pokemon.

"oh, what will we do with all this money?" zelda mused to herself in a sing song voice, chuckling when she heard her zorua snickering in amusement. "there's enough for us to have a feast, dear." she'd treat her little darling very well after her stunning show. the zorua beamed, enjoying the praise that zelda showered upon her. she loved the attention she was given with her mistress.
it was better to travel at night, zelda surmised, as she slowly strolled along the route in the late of the night. nincada chirped a tuneful song that she could move her feet to, and it delighted zelda to no end as she drummed her toes and started moving her feet to a beat she had summoned in her head. "i suppose we could use a phone," she hummed, "we should give that boy a call back. give him thanks for the money."
her eyes wandered for any possible late night traveller she might chance upon. dmitri just so happened to be the poor target of today. zelda approached his small camp quietly, barely making a sound in the night. "alright, do your thing," she whispered to her zorua, petting her behind the ears. the dark type slinked forward and quietly crept closer to their sleeping place, sniffing the air and keeping her eyes on the lookout for anything phone-like or valuable.

"Mmmmmmm.~" He stretched and could finally feel sleep creeping upon him, and the rising and falling of Swinub as he breathed was almost hypnotic. It comforted him to know that such a trustworthy companion could be kept outside of its pokeball without it getting any ideas. Dmitri heard the sounds of the meadows at night, the sing song tune of kricketots and the like chiming into the chorus.
Zzzzzz.
"Swin... swin.... sw-swinub!" Broski was also entranced by the aura set by the pokemon, but his acute sense of smell gave him the slip on something encroaching on Dmitri. It snorted heavily and scrambled out from beneath Dmitri, rushing to face the interloper. It couldn't make out an image in the dark, but the heavy stank of some unruly creature lurked just a few feet before it. Broski wasn't quite aware of the trainer yet, but there were smells in the air that made it uneasy.
"What's wrong, Swinub?" Dmitri had packed everything snug inside his sleeping bag. The last time he'd left something out in the open, a wild pokemon had ransacked his stores and Dmitri was forced to buy all sorts of goods all over again. It had taught him a lesson in possession; if you want to keep it, keep it safe. But he couldn't possibly know what this pokemon wanted from him, nor that there was a trainer nearby. He gave the benefit of doubt.
"What's there?" He was sitting up now, scowling into the dark. I was just about to fall asleep, dammit. Grumpy and irritable, he hoped for some resolution of the given situation. Broski seemed stalwart and held his ground, placing the intruder and Dmitri on opposite sides of one another. What's going on? He rummaged for a flashlight, but found he was ill-equipped and hadn't brought a flashlight.
Broski is standing by!

ZELDA MELCHIOR I'm metagaming so hard I almost feel bad but you can't have my stuff.</3

zelda stood watch, scents of incense and smoke lingering on her clothes. she stood guard with her hood drawn over her head, keeping her light hair out of sight. everything was a waiting game now - the zorua had to do her job, and zelda simply had to intervene if something went wrong. she kept her ears peeled for the sounds, quick to react if something required her attention. she could make out her zorua's soft footsteps, picturing the events.
broski's sudden movement caused the zorua to react. she skirted away from the swinub and its twitching nose, causing a ruckus. alarms went off in zelda's head. shit, things were getting awry, which meant that she had to get in there fast to try and salvage the situation. the zorua yipped, catching glimpse of the swinub. her blue eyes flashed and she swiftly changed her appearance, looking no more like the swinub in question. the now disguised zorua grunted with sounds of alarm while zelda hastily made her way over.
she recognised her own pokemon immediately. "zoe!" she called out, a placeholder name that she had adopted in the last two seconds. zorua, recognising zelda's voice, scurried over and nuzzled her ankle, sounding a little distressed. zelda put on her best look of distress. "i-it's just my pokemon! you found her, thank goodness," she mumbled like a professional, playing with her hair. "i hope she didn't cause you much trouble."

Dmitri sat up, reaching out towards Broski and pulling him to his chest. He stroked along its fur, soothing his woes and eyeing up the late night guest. She lost her... what is it? Another Swinub? He smiled, thinking he wasn't the only one who loved these adorable little hogs. But something was amiss, why was this girl up so late? It seemed strange.
I'd be looking day and night if I lost Broski..., that settled his worries, for the moment being.
"No, no; it's fine, really. I was just trying to get some sleep. That's a neat lookin' swinub you have there. I think I heard you call them Zoe?" He didn't move from his spot, but rather seemed to scoot over if Zelda cared to sit down with him. But he would have guessed they'd quickly scamper back along home, seeing as she'd found what she came looking for. What was her next move?
"So... what's your name? I'm Dmitri." Minutes ago he would have struggled to remain awake, but this sudden twist of events had him alert and eager to understand. Broski whined softly in his caress, brushing his snout against his chest apologetically. It got him covered in hog slime, but he would live.

she hadn't been planning for this to happen. with their plan gone awry, zelda had to play this part well so that they didn't suspect a thing. she scooped her own swinub up in her arms and pet the brown furred swine, nodding hastily at dmitri. "yes, yes, we got lost walking. it's been hours since we got separated... but at least i've found her. i was so worried," she looked like she could have fainted or something. zelda prided herself on her natural acting abilities. had she known the wonders of television earlier, she would have made it big in the business. but alas, the simpler life called for her and she couldn't resist.
"yes, she's zoe," zelda lied, keeping up the game. she never had a set name for her zorua, often changing it around so as to keep their identities a secret. "i've known her all my life, so she's very important to me." not entirely a lie - she had the zorua from the start of her thieving days, united by common ideals and agreeable personality. zelda was attached to her, very much so. the swinub shuffled in her grasp. zelda pondered taking a seat, before deciding against it. wouldn't make for a very hasty getaway.
she offered dmitri a smile, the curve of her face lit in the dim light. "well, dmitri, i'm emre. again, we're sorry for disturbing your sleep. do you sleep under the stars often?" she liked to do so herself, matching constellations and waking early to do morning prayers as the sun rose from its slumber. she used a different name like it was second nature to her,

"Yeah, even back home I would. If you've ever been far north enough, you can see the aurora borealis. I come from really far away; I used to see it some nights. These skys are very different, it gets much darker here. Makes me afraid, and really uneasy." Many people seemed to have outgrown their fear of the dark. Dmitri still feared it, for everything that it was. He was happy to share someone's company, so far as they didn't appear crooked. He wasn't the type to question; anything to keep his mind distracted.
"Might not be midnight yet, but might as well have a snack, eh?" Snickers were on the menu. He was already undressing one and stuffing it into his mouth before throwing one at Emre; it was his way of showing he insisted. Both would never come to realize the full irony of this situation.
"You were looking that long, huh? You must really care for Zoe." Broski was oinking and winking at Zoe, showing her his moves. Dmitri thought he needed to pee or something, the way he was freaking the hell out. What's gotten into you, little fella? He repositioned him, cradling him inside the sleeping bag for now. Perhaps Emre meant to leave soon, she didn't seem interested in sitting down.
"Don't worry about it. I've been catching pokemon for days, and yet I still don't feel much safer or any less alone. Broski's tough, but I know there's worse out there. Back home was particularly dangerous in the dead of winter. I've heard all sorts of tales about adventurers losing their pokemon along their way. Makes me really conscious about how I train my pokemon." A strict ethical regimen, no breaks, effort was the bottom line to pass his expectations. He hoped that was enough.

from the viewpoint of a traveller, dmitri's words fascinated zelda. she wanted to know more. here in hoenn, you never quite heard about anything like the aurora borealis. "the darker skies here have the brightest stars," she mused. sprawled in the sand with the desert's cool, the stars were her compass. they spoke volumes, of direction and changes and fortunes. even the sun that she revered was a star in its own right.
she didn't falter at the mention of food. her zorua sniffed the air curiously, wondering what the scent was. zelda took a small sniff of the chocolate bar tossed her way. zorua couldn't eat this, so she didn't offer any to "zoe". she took a bite, pleasantly surprised by the nutty chocolate coating. certainly different from the berries she was so used to grilling and eating. "thank you," she said after she had swallowed a bite. it wasn't valuable, but at least food would sustain her body for her to keep moving. this was probably as much as she would be able to extort from him without using force.
"yes, well, we grew up in the deserts. zoe's a little different, she stands the region's heat a lot better than many of her ice-types brethren." the swinub in her arms took little notice of broski's actions, only giggling in a strange manner. she must have found his attempts hilarious. considering she had transformed based off the swinub, the creature seemed extremely narcissistic, getting off on its own looks. hilarious.
zelda shifted her weight slightly as she popped the last of the candy bar into her mouth. "i understand. especially for a girl like me, danger lurks at every corner. i misplaced most of my belongings, so we've been wandering until we can get to the next town. i can't lower my guard, and i need a pokemon to take care of lil' me. it's dangerous..." she lamented, looking fearfully at the looming branches like terrors were just beyond them.

Stars are always brightest when it's dark. Someone had said this to him before, he was certain of it. But who, and why? It seemed coincidental to him for Emre to say such a thing, but it warmed him up to her. If there was a single trace of doubt about her intent, Dmitri now granted her full amnesty.
"I'm glad you happened along my camp." He relaxed a little easier, slouching back against the pillow he'd provided and rolling Broski onto his belly. Dmitri rubbed his exposed underside, and he began fidgeting to get away. Swinub scampered all the way into his pillow case to escape the treatment. He laughed softly at his pokemon's distress.
"A desert? That sounds strange. I hear those get pretty chilly at night, though. Must be why she likes it so much, maybe?" Shrugging casually, he turned onto his side and gave Emre a look over. She's brave, especially for a girl. Perhaps she motivated him, gave him a sense of courage that was lost to him; after all if she was snooping around at night unafraid, it stood to reason he should be able to muster the same kind of bravery. He didn't doubt he could do it for his pokemon, but for himself? Dmitri wasn't too sure.
"Did your parents ever tell you bedtime stories? Mine never did, far as I remember." He wasn't sure why he asked such a rogue question, but it felt oddly relevant. Maybe he felt that a lack of nurturing from his parents created the goofy, introverted and gullible specimen lying before her whose eyes lit up at the slightest sign of company.
Or maybe he was just eager to hear one such story, to pass the time and lullaby Broski to sleep.

she spoke like she needed the pity of others, but zelda didn't. the act she was putting on grew cumbersome, but she just needed to persist for as long as she was in this stranger's hair. "yes, i am quite glad myself," she murmured, although i would be even more glad if you weren't awake. "it's nice to find company at this hour." she had to think of this positively, like how he was giving her the time of day at this time of day. truthfully, she was a little tired herself, but she wasn't planning to sidle up to this stranger. she'd find someone with warmer hands.
until then, she'd roam until she found what she needed. zelda let out a soft chuckle as she scratched her swinub at the place where one could normally find a ear - it was zorua's favourite spot to be scratched, but a little hard to find on a furry swine. she vibrated with a low rumble. "the stars were my bedtime stories," she motioned to the sky full of them. she traced the trail of orion and gestured to the several other constellations. "all the folklores and the myths..."
"but it's getting late," she murmured, "i wouldn't want to disturb your peace for any longer." she prepared to take her leave.
Post by Dmitri Khvostov on Jul 15, 2015 13:50:30 GMT
"Oh, of course. It was nice meeting you, Emre." He hadn't expected her to leave, and yet it spoke for itself. She was only here for Zoe, and she found her. There was likely some house or shelter nearby they could call their own, and Dmitri couldn't object to her parting. So he snuggled inside his bag and became a human metapod, sealing himself inside until he could wake up beautiful in the morning.
Swinub seemed to snort happily, prodding at Dmitri's ear as he tried to close his eyes. You're really happy to have found one of your kind, huh? Dmitri had felt nearly as happy in Emre's presence, though he hadn't exactly felt it necessary to start showing off his moves. Broski lacked the class and suave attitude to be a romantic; he honked and snorted to get his point across. It was unrefined.
"G'night, Broski." He turned in for the night, spent.

she said she didn't want to disturb his sleep, but zelda was clear that she wasn't going to get anything out of this human any longer. her disguised zorua shuffled a little longer in her arms, zelda holding her tightly. "we'll be on our way now. ta," dainty fingers wriggled from under her swinub as she bade them farewell. she repeated the name under her breath. dmitri, she wouldn't forget it. the light had been dim, but she wouldn't forget the face of the man as well.
a coy smile hung from her lips as she padded off gently into the night. her zorua finally shook the disguise off, the black furred creature snuggling affectionately into zelda's bosom. she chuckled in amusement. "well, looks like we turned up with nothing," she droned, a little disappointed with the lack of spoils this time. "looks like that pokemon has a good sense of smell. we'll have to be careful next time." she was a master thief. as if she'd let the first try bring her down.
