the shadows are getting longer and we know no envy
Hmm... the blonde certainly hoped Usa hadn't forgotten about the arrangement they'd made for this morning... granted, it'd been late last night when Kristmar had walked the boy to the pokécenter. It wasn't like he was late or anything yet but... Kris felt a small niggle of worry that the teen would pull a no-show.
He sat, cross-legged, on the grass just on the side of the route leading out of Petalburg - where they'd arranged to meet for a friendly battle - with his seviper's large head resting on his lap. The placid serpent appeared to be dozing although the way his tongue restlessly flickered from time to time proved that he was very much awake. He was waiting, eagerly, for their opponent to appear while soaking up some of this morning sun.
"Comfortable?" Kris murmured quietly to his pokémon with a slight fondness as he began to comb his long, sandy locks back with his fingers into a touseled ponytail. "Could you move a little though? Kinda cutting off circulation to my leg there, Kasi."
As quickly as he could, Usa made his way towards the meeting spot. His face flustered from the run, he feared being late. He could see Kris' luxurious blonde hair in the distance. "Sorry", he called out, "I hope I didn't keep you waiting long". As soon as he was close enough, he dropped his hands to his knees and rested them there for a moment so that he could catch his breath. Right beside him stood Leonidas who chuckled at the sight of his out of breath trainer.
After a few seconds of heavy breathing, Usa stood up. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a white handkerchief, which he used to wipe the sweat from his face. It's way to early to already be sweating...so embarrassing. His face turned a soft pink colour, as he walked towards Kris. Absol followed behind. "Sorry I'm late" he said with a nervous smile. As he spoke, he ran his fingers through his short blonde hair to move the loose strands from his face.
He glanced over at Kris' partner, a Seviper, with widened eyes. His mouth opened to reveal an excited grin. "I've never seen a Seviper up close before. Wow!"

the shadows are getting longer and we know no envy
A voice, slightly distant, caught Kristmar's attention and he instinctively swivelled around where he sat to have a look where it came from. Lowering his hands from the ponytail he'd attempted to tame his lengthy hair back into, he spotted Usa hurrying over to him, looking quite flustered and pink in the face. The sight made the blonde chuckle lightly and he waved over to the tired boy.
"No worries, no worries," he called out to him. "You're not too late."
Kasimir blinked open his slitted eyes to glance up at the newcomer who he assumed was to be their opponent. His forked tongue slid from his mouth to taste the young male's scent, rasping softly and silently enjoying the attention being given to him. This human wasn't so bad, energetic, but not bad. His rasp turned into a gentle sound of contentment as Kris ran his hand over the creature's large decorated head.
"This is Kasimir," he said with a wide smile, "I'm going to use him in our little battle. He's pretty lazy... he could use the exercise." The serpent's tail twitched, the sunlight glinting off its sharp blade. "But I'll let you catch your breath first," Kris teased, his eyes narrowing slightly with a playful squint, "I'm ready whenever you are."
After a deep breath, Usa nodded in Kris' direction to signal that he was ready to battle. He smiled gently at the two before him, but his smile soon disappeared as his mind began to race with all the information he could recall bout Sevipers.
Poison types were dangerous because of their ability to poison their opponents, and this fact made Usa reluctant to send out Leonidas against Kris' majestic serpent. Zubat. Zubat is probably the best option I have right now.
Usa peered over at his Leonidas, who stood upright like a statue as he observed every inch of the opposing Seviper. "Sorry Leonidas", Usa whispered, "but, Dani, you'll be the first Pokemon I send out". As he spoke, he lifted his right hand to reveal his Zubat's pokeball. With a quick flick of the wrist, the Pokeball was up in the air. Dani soon emerged from the Pokeball in a flash of light. After performing her customary entrance -- landing on Usa's face and giving him a kiss -- she returned to the battlefield ready fully ready to battle to the end.
Leonidas whimpered in disappointment. Zubat always seemed to hog the spotlight even in moments where Usa did not intend to use her. This made Leonidas slightly frustrated and annoyed. The Absol glared at his partner Pokemon, but soon sat by his trainers feet with an exasperated expression. "Next time", he thought, "next time the spotlight will be on me..."
Usa's eyes widened with anticipation. A slow grin grew on his face as he pointed at Kris' Seviper. "Use SUPERSONIC", he yelled, "and then follow up with an ASTONISH"...

the shadows are getting longer and we know no envy
At Usa's signal that he was ready to commence their friendly battle they'd met up for, Kris got up to his feet with a catlike stretch. He nodded at Kasimir - giving a jerk of his chin forward to encourage him over to where they'd battle - and prepared himself. He was slightly surprised that Usa chose not to send out his absol for his first pokémon, since he was out anyway, but he wasn't disappointed with the... affectionate zubat that he ended up sending out. Zubats, for many people, were considered almost pests. Flying rattata. But, as a young man with an affinity for poison types, Kris wouldn't mind incorporating one onto his team in the future... crobat were really cool.
Kasimir was left addled by the zubat's supersonic waves though no sooner as he'd stepped (or, rather, slithered) onto the improvised battle field. He hissed and swished his tail about aggressively, his head rolling about as he tried to contend with the disorientating after effects of the attack. The way the zubat spooked him, enough for the seviper to hurt himself in his fright, didn't help at all either.
"Kasi... Kasi!" Kris called out to the serpent, trying to get his attention before he did himself too much damage. "Use swagger!" Two could play the confusion game if that was how Usa wanted to start this. Kasimir, in the confusing soup that was his mind, vaguely registered his trainer's command. His first attempt to execute the move though failed as he struck himself with the filed end of his tail, although the second try came out much more successful. Kasimir moved his coiled body over the ground, bunching it up to flaunt the way his muscles shimmered under his scaly bodice, and hissed proudly, albeit a little sluggishly, and tossed his head with pomp.
Despite the insufferably loud screeching that Dani made, bringing with it memories that Usa hoped he would never soon recall, the supersonic had done as intended, and this brought a smile to his face. Seviper was confused, which saved Zubat -- for the time being, at least -- from whatever attacks Kris had lined up.
A slow tingle ran down Usa's spine when a memory surfaced of his ears popping and him falling to his knees, after being hit by one of Zubat's supersonics. His face quickly contorted into an expression of discomfort, as a bitter taste in his mouth caused him to stick his tongue out.
Dani began to dance about as she periodically banged her wings against her chest. The sight of this made Usa nervous. The tiny Zubat seemed to be gloating about her success, and in the process hurting herself. Was this the effect of swagger? Usa had rejoiced when the attack seemed to cause no damage. But, now he worried he was in a much more dangerous situation than he initially thought.
He observed Dani intently. The attack sounded familiar, but for whatever reason, he could not quite recollect what it did. He called out for Zubat to use another astonish. But, this only caused her to hit herself with greater force. Another attempt at attacking only yielded the same result. "Come on Dani, get a hold of yourself", he screamed. But, the Pokemon only bobbed up and down as she pounded on her chest.
What should I do? Should I switch her out? This is clearly confusion... His eyes grew more wild as he searched his brain for a solution to the situation.

The two pokémon looked a right sight. Both confused, it was a humourous scene, one that even elicited an entertained smirk out of Kristmar despite himself. Luckily for him, it seemed like the zubat's confusion had gripped her much more worse than it had Kasimir. She wasn't even lucid enough to land a single attack.
Noticing how Kasimir appeared as though he still maintained a vestige of composure, Kris sought his opportunity to attack before the serpent succumbed again to his debilitatingly addled mind.
"Bite, Kasi!" He ordered the large beast of a snake while he could. Kasimir's was quite unfocused still and he struggled to zone in on the zubat but the command was received nevertheless. Hissing loudly, the sound tearing from his throat with frustration and building pique, he went for the flying pokémon. He saw double, no... triple in his confusion and he lunged for the one that appeared more focused. He went again, lunging for her, but missed and ended up hurting himself on meeting nothing between his fangs.
Zubat bobbed up and down in the air as she struggled to free herself of the horrible effects of confusion. All the while, she pounded her chest as if she were doing a war dance. A strange headache made her unaware of the commands Usa gave. And, a world twisted and frenzied made it impossible for her to tell left from right or up from down. Still, she could feel her muscles tingle as if she had been injected with a dose of adrenalin. She felt more powerful than she did before, but the confusion left her powerless and vulnerable to the attacks of her enemy.
Usa contemplated switching. After all, that was the only surefire way to rid a Pokemon of confusion during a battle, right? But, an odd yearning to see Zubat succeed kept him from making the call. Why did he want to see this Pokemon that he so disliked, succeed? This Pokemon that annoyed him with her slobbery kisses and tendency to snuggle the back of his head like it was a bird nest. This Pokemon that left her Pokeball whenever she pleased, sometimes at the most inopportune times. Why?
His heart became heavy as he watched her struggling. One more time. I'll try one more time... He called out to her again: "Use ASTONISH". But, the result was the same. She only managed to hurt herself in confusion. He screamed at the Pokemon, with all of his might, to try again. So much so, that his voice cracked in the process.
But in that moment, a glimmer of hope. He Zubat movement became more stable. Did she hear the frustration in the Usa's voice? Or, did she sense that he was not too far from crying? Perhaps it was through her own will, or just blind luck that she was freed from the prison that kept her from attacking all this time. Regardless of how it happened, she was no longer confused.
Her muscles tightened as she lunged at Kasimir. Astonish was the last thing she heard before falling into her pit of confusion, and that was exactly the move she planned to use.

In spite of the way he flinched after it, it seemed like the zubat's astonish had been just what Kasimir had needed to finally snap him out of his confusion. The disorientating fog cleared and the seviper regained lucidity. In celebration, the seviper gave a jubilated cry and whipped his tail around as he turned to glance at his trainer, signalling that he was back on terrafirma.
"Alright!" Kris grinned gleefully, visibly glad that the confusion's effects had worn off. He made haste to give Kasimir his next attack before Usa thought to have his pokémon use supersonic again. "Get it with wrap and make sure you squeeze real tight."
No longer confused, Kasimir immediately darted after the zubat. He almost literally threw himself at it in his need to take out his previous frustration out on it. After all, this pokémon had been the one that'd confused him and made him create such an embarrassing spectacle. Hissing menacingly, the seviper tried to get his muscular body around the fragile-looking bat, aiming to coil around it and squeeze deathly hard. "Sevvvv..."
There was something about her that slowly grew on him. Maybe it was her tenacity that finally got him. A smile quickly took the place of a shocked expression on Usa's face. As the excitement of the battle gripped him, he took a step forward. A single tear ran down his cheek -- proving that he was indeed about to cry. The feeling of wet prompted him to wipe his eyes vigorously with his sleeve. Only babies cried when they lost, after all, right? And, if Kris saw him cry, the embarrassment would probably send him to his grave.
But, no time to worry about that now...
The battle continued. From Kasimir's more calculated movement, Usa assumed Dani wasn't the only one that was freed from her confusion. The serpent lunged at the tiny bat with vengeance in its eyes, as it attempted to carry out its attack.
Wrap...Usa definitely recognized the move this time. Alarms bells sounded in his head as the after effect of the move would surely mean the end of the battle for his Zubat. Not only would she be at the mercy of Kasi, the tight squeeze would continue to do damage! He knew that being caught would spell trouble for a Pokemon, especially if they didn't know any ranged attacks. "Dodge Kasi's attack", he yelled. Zubat's quick dip in the air assured him that she would comply. As soon as Kasi got in close enough, she tucked her wings in as she did a nose dive and a spin through the Seviper's coiling body. As she emerged from the opposing Pokemon's attempted wrap, she extended her wings proudly to show that she escaped unharmed. Usa smiled at her show of success. "Follow up with astonish attacks". Zubat quickly complied.

The zubat managed to evade Kasimir's attack but the long-haired coordinator didn't let it faze him. His serpent pokémon, in turn, managed to brace himself enough after one of his opponent's startling attacks for it not to spook him. He was able to avoid some damage, thankfully, while opening another window of attack for him. Kris eyed the poison type for a second, trying to gauge the amount of damage he'd already taken so far and how much more he'd be able to endure. Kasimir was tiring, anyone would be able to see that; his previous confusion had taken quite a bit out of him and these weak yet persistent attacks were steadily chipping away his health.
"Try wrapping yourself around her again, Kasi," he commanded him firmly, his low voice carrying easily over to the black and gold snake. "And then bite!"
Determined to capture this slippery zubat with his body, Kasimir went after her, again, undaunted. He repeated the same action as before - lunging for her with the intent to coil his lithe form around her to squeeze her with a vicelike grip - but this time he also opened his maw wide, wide enough to expose his full set of serrated and unnerving fangs.
This battle was shaping up to be his most intense one yet. And this was only the first round. Zubat's first astonish had managed to hit. But, the crafty Seviper was able to make good use of its elongated body to dance around the second one like it was nothing. This wouldn't be a problem if not for the fact that it left Zubat incredibly open to retaliation. And, retaliate the opposing serpent did. Before Usa could give his next command, Zubat was already locked in Seviper's grip.
The force at which Kasimir gripped her took an obvious tole. Zubat cried out in agony as she tried to wiggle herself free. To make matters worst, Seviper was ordered to follow up with a bite attack.
It was now or never. With no ranged attacks, Zubat had little options that could save it. Still, Usa had not given up yet. Use supersonic,he screamed, knowing full well that if the Seviper's bite was successful, this would be the end of Zubat.

Before the seviper had a chance to sink his teeth into the trapped zubat, the scrawny thing attempted to repel him away - in some last ditch attempt - with those disorientating soundwaves from before. Kasimir hissed loudly and open-mouthed, trying to counter the supersonic in any way he could, by making noise himself. He wasn't going to give up without taking a bite out of this zubat!
"That's it, Kasi," Kris encouraged his pokémon, taking a step forward out of concern. "Keep a good hold on her and bite! Use bite already!" There was a slight frustration in his posture as well. He couldn't afford for Kasimir to get confused at this point of the battle.
And, as if by wishing it he jinxed himself, Kris gave a small growl on spotting the telltale signs of his seviper succumbing to the pokémon's supersonic. He began to thrash the end of his tail about madly and roll his head. Like, well, fuck. But it wasn't over yet. Kasimir could still hold on for a little longer.
Luckily though, the snake retained enough lucidity to remember his trainer's last command - bite - and, still keeping a tight hold on the zubat, he lunged for it again. When he tried to repeat the action though, the clumsy thing ended up biting his own body that coiled about the zubat... making Kristmar cringe slightly out of slight embarrassment. That'd looked dumb.
It was a small glimmer of hope, but that was all Zubat needed. Kasimir biting himself gave her the opportunity to wiggle her way out of his loosened hold on her. But, being caught did not go without an adverse effect. It was clear that under the pressure of the Seviper's grip, the tiny bat had to endure a lot.
She bobbed and weaved in the air as soon as she was freed. But, her usual high spirited flying was not to be seen. The flapping of her wings were not as elegant, and it was obvious that it was taking every ounce of her, not to fall to the ground. Usa had to end this round quickly. Use astonish, he yelled, hoping that the majestic serpent, in his confusion, would be unable to dodge it. Then follow up with another astonish!
The tiny bat dug deep to muster up the energy to strike. She lunged at her opponent with fury in her heart. She wanted Usa to feel for her what she felt for him -- love and admiration.
She knew all along that Usa loved her less than Leonidas. So, every chance she got, she strived to make herself number one in his eyes. With all this on her mind, she pushed forward towards her target. Hoping that this was her moment -- her moment to make Usa love her.

the shadows are getting longer and we know no envy
The outcome of Kasimir's battle was as good as sealed once he'd gotten confused for the second time but, watching the zubat end up avoiding his bite attack and escape the wrap, was what pretty much confirmed it for Kris. He could only watch, with a quiet groan, as Kasimir's opponent took advantage of his newly disorientated state to deal another couple of attacks. The flying pest was persistent and a hardy bugger, Kris would give him that. This all was a bit too much for the seviper to handle and, at his limit, he slowly uncoiled his body and went limp on the ground.
"You almost had her, Kasi," Kris sighed, calling the exhausted snake back into his pokéball. He wouldn't mind accepting this loss for now, he was sure he could make up for it. The blonde dropped his cerise eyes to the metal capsules attached to his belt for a moment, silently pensive as he mulled over who to send out next. The zubat was very weakened, he could tell, so perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to send out someone who could use the experience.
Kris plucked a pokéball and released a small pokémon by his feet. A juvenile bulbasaur who didn't seem very old at all. Kris crouched down by the young grass type and gave his ears an affectionate little fondle.
"C'mon, Detlev, ready for a little go?" He was answered with an enthusiastic growl and Kris smiled widely at him. He gave the bulbasaur a pat on his shoulder and sent him off into battle. "The zubat's pretty weak so a couple of tackles should do it, Det." Not needing much more encouragement, the little pokémon began charging off to his airborne opponent, aiming to crash into her with his body.
