welcome to calamity! we are an au pokemon site based in hoenn. we do not have canons so you can pick them as your fcs! we have a short one hundred word word count. and you get to also pick your own starter! calamity is going to focus on providing users with a good and stable plot line to follow. this helps each character progress and some might even have a play in affecting the plot! we hope you enjoy your time here and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask.
hey guys! we've finally hit our three month mark! let's stay strong. the activity check and gala have ended, if your character has been archived and you need them back please pm one of the admins! unfortunately, noods has steped down from his admin position. make sure you say your goodbyes here!

hello calamity! we're nearing the two months mark in a few weeks. how time flies! right now we have two things going on that need your participation. the first is an activity check! it is impotant that you check in so you don't lose your face claim. the second is the otm nomiations! we're doing it a bit different than last time. so please submit your nominations in. a vote thread will be up in the next few days. there will also be a formal event coming very soon, so keep your eye out for that. keep being cool!
we're currently about to host calamity's first contest in slatepor. trainers are flocking to the city to see, the city's been trying to get good pr since the gala, and it seems to be working! they're asking for both coordinators and volunteer judges to sign up.
CALAMITY is a roleplaying forum inspired by the popular franchise POKEMON, which does not belong to us. the skin was crafted by PHARAOH LEAP of GANGNAM STYLE. special thanks to SPIRAL for contributing ideas! all art on the forum does not belong to us unless stated otherwise, while all written works belong to the members who posted them. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING that is not yours, please. thank you.
The shop needs more items, and with TMs and such being more of a coordinator/tutor related aspect of the site (whether or not this is subjected to change, I have no idea), I figured there are really only two HMs that are really mandatory for this site in general.
Those HMs are fly and surf (especially this one).
An idea crossed my head, something unique and not yet (as far as I know) by other pokemon sites. This idea had formed from a thread I made with Sam, fitting his Aerodactyl with a saddle to allow him to fly comfortably and use the pokemon as a mouny, something that can be done realistically without the need of HMs, and unlike the game mechanics, fits a lot better when it comes to roleplaying.
Especially when it comes to freeform roleplaying.
So, my suggestion is ultimately that we replace these two HMs with what was suggested above. They would cost a fair amount of PD, obviously, but would give it more purpose too. The train station could fit under this, BUT for over seas and for those who don't want to pay everytime they want to visit an earlier stop, this works.
What you would do is fit the saddle to a reasonable sized pokemon. Not sure what to do otherwise. There are pros and cons that I'm aware of.
Feel free to add to this if you wish, or debate, discuss, tell me what you think!

Seems more like a way to get around needing to allocate one of our Six moves to Surf/Fly. And then there's the question of Dive, do we replace that with a Mount+Scuba Gear? Should flying too high require an oxygen stabilizer and pressurized suit? We could try to ignore the complicated parts and just have different levels of "saddle gear."
Level 1 saddling gear, for basic flight.
Level 2 saddling gear, for surface seavoyaging.
Level 3 saddling gear, for deepsea/atmospheric wayfaring.
Purchasing the first would give discounts on the consecutive purchase and so on, and buying the last one outright should also be an option. The trainer should only be required to purchase one that can be reattached to any pokemon. No sense having to clutter inventory with multiple items.
I personally wanted to see events start throwing obstacles that require moves like Fly to overcome but, it would be easier to tailor it towards pokemon that obviously just show the capacity to fly and all that to avoid taking up moves that just aren't as likable. Fly is okay, Surf is too, but Strength? Cut? Not so much. Rock Smash is also iffy.
In a way I really support the idea of trying to allow pokemon to use these obstacle-overcoming abilities of theirs without the need of the move explicitly , but rather the equipment to facilitate the trainer's riding on them. It fits better into free form roleplay and makes it a quality of life improvement on developing move sets. It will still obviously force people to pick pokemon that could learn these moves or at least looks like it could perform them all the same, even if the game suggests otherwise.
It sounds good to me, though I'm not sure how everyone else would feel about it. Only one way to find out! |D
I know I'm new here, but this is actually something we use on the site I own! (But I'd still say it's a pretty original idea ) I really like the idea and I feel like it makes things more realistic personally.
Like, rather than using a disc to teach them something that they should technically be able to do by instinct anyway, the saddle gives more room for the actual training of being a mount. Like you said, it works much better for the premise of roleplay even if realism isn't the optimal goal. That being said, it also requires a Rideable Pokemon list, considering how little sense it would make to strap a saddle onto a little Remoraid and try to ride on it :T
But yeah. Realism x3
I haven't really been here long enough to know if you do Promos or Contests, but that's how we give them out since they're pretty valuable. Of course, making them expensive shop items would work just as well, especially since you need surf to access many of the main areas here.
Personally, I think there should be a distinct difference from using the HM 'Fly' and 'Surf' in ordinary roleplay for transportation vs using them in battle.
I imagine some folk would love to use the move 'Surf'. While others simply want to swim with their Pokemon over bodies of water. Lapras shouldn't have much difficulty transporting someone. But actually controlling bodies of water and using it against an enemy should involve another mechanic entirely.

I like this idea. Rather than limit it at a saddle, I'd think about encompassing a scuba kit too, like Felon mentioned. Surf and Dive are two HM moves that are basically needed so to progress on the map whereas Fly is more... aesthetic since, once you've passed through a town, you can freely visit it again in the future anyway.
A saddle to replace the function of Surf on large water types so to advance to the sea towns would be a nice obstacle and it'd also be usable on large bird/flying pokémon capable of flight just for a cool extra (why pretend your charrie caught the train back to Oldale when you can have them ride in style?). The scuba kit would allow charries to visit Sootopolis too.
I say 'replace the function' because, yes, I wouldn't want to render the actual HMs obsolete since Surf, Fly and Dive are alright moves which people might be interested in using in battle, along the lines of what Yoyo said. HMs for battle, items for use outside of battle.
So... something like this seems reasonable:
Saddle (00PD). Allows sea transportation on large pokémon capable of learning Surf. Also allows transport by air on large pokémon capable of the move Fly. Scuba Kit (00PD). Allows the user to visit the bottom of the sea on large pokémon capable of learning Dive.
Rather than make a list of 'rideable' pokémon though, I'd leave it up to the common sense of each member bc... c'mon. Don't be a Gary unless you want rangers on your butt.

There'd be a large amount of final stage evolutions not quite big enough to facilitate flight for an average human, so we'd have to ignore traditional pokedex numbers like cila suggested would be the obvious solution in CBox. Because otherwise, there's a very select few capable of getting big enough.
But that's easily agreed upon, I imagine, so no issues there.
My only concern is that the price stays reasonable. These should feel like choices, not mandatory items that require one to invest all their early savings into for little to nothing in return when compared to the returns on the cost of items like an ability capsule, rare candy, TM/move tutor, etc. They're relatively inexpensive and yield huge returns. If these cost too much and are mostly for roleplay flavor, then they're hardly worth it.
Though like I said, making specific obstacles in events that require this sort of thing would make the possibility of a 'return' on an investment like this much greater. Another thing I wanted to bring up, since Saint gave me the idea, can pokemon with levitate grant their trainers an equivalent to flight? And would this technically bypass the need for a saddle? I wouldn't be surprised if you guys denounced this as a possibility, but I don't think it should be so easily tossed aside.
After all, not everyone is 100% guaranteed to end up with a winged creature large enough to facilitate their trainer during flight. Yeah there's tons of pokemon with wings, but were we really going to force these choices on people? We're free form and should try to remain open to the possibility that someone might, for whatever reasons, not have these pokemon to provide these services. Alternatives, people need alternatives.
If I recall, Saint linked a picture of an Aegislash carrying someone on it. Gengar can pull people around and even technically induce a temporary ghost-like state. Metagross has been shown to hover, and so have many other pokemon. Even if they don't quite look it, they could apparently demonstrate some varied forms of 'flight.' Alternatives. Personally after a bit of extra thought, I start to question why we need saddles. Saddles can help keep you tucked in, that's for sure, but on a leisurely ride across the sea or a low-altitude flight barely over the treetops, there's situations where a saddle isn't even necessary.
Do we really need to make people dump PD on something that doesn't even necessarily serve the function any better than the pokemon would without it? Climbing atop of them and holding on tight ought to be enough. Saddles were meant to help keep people's belongings with them, and keep them comfortable. It isn't impossible to ride an animal without one.
But scuba gear for diving makes sense, at the least. Gear for withstanding high altitudes, that also makes sense. So I'm not saying saddles couldn't be included among this gear, just that I'm starting to question whether suddenly telling people "You need to drop x amount of PD on something that isn't necessary to the purpose it serves, in order to do this," is a good idea. But when you've got them by something credible, say the need for regulated oxygen, you've got a more than valid point to hold against them. I say most of this because honestly, I worry that some are too prepared to put these items at a painstakingly high price because of the alleged 'utility' they provide. But the only real purpose they'd serve would be if they create obstacles in rp they could be used to overcome. That way their investment yields a return.
There's nothing stopping a player from just magically stating they're one place or another on rp especially with liquid time, so using these pokemon to fly to somewhere else just like the games isn't a necessary action. Neither is the surfing/swimming. I'm still all for 'saddles' and the gear that would come with it, but I think I should go over a few basics quickly. These will outline a few perks for what investing in these items entails. Because flight/swimming shouldn't be restricted to those with saddles considering a saddle isn't required.
1.) A person with a pokemon capable of flight/swimming should be able to do so freely, but can only carry one person at capacity. Diving is restricted, and technically high altitudes beyond our threshold as humans. Items cannot be brought along underwater (excluding pokeballs,) because the water would damage and ruin them for not being safely stored.
2.) A person with a saddle/gear has unlimited access to all terrain, be it flight, atmospheric flight, surfing or deep-sea diving, and would be able to carry 'guests' as part of their investment, despite the inconsistencies that would obviously arise (one suit, pokemon room, etc.) to act as a perk for their investment. They would also be able to safely store items to bring along while deep-sea diving. This allows them to offer their services to a trainer who lacks the pokemon, to create another outlet to get a return on their investment as well as prevent players from being left behind in events because of a lack of a suitable pokemon on their team. The greatest reason I feel like these perks make sense is because, if you look at our system, we generally force players to pick 3 out of 6(+) available pokemon. We're practically lowering their choice by one (1) for every obstacle we throw in their way that requires flight/swimming/diving.
I'm really jumpy/flaky so I tend to bounce between opinions sometimes. Some of these concerns might be justified, others might not be. Feel free to shoot me a few rebuttals so we can all get on the same page.
