This was Day 1 of his new life as a Pokemon Ranger. Admittedly, he wouldn't be doing much for the first week; patrolling the routes around town, training with his new partner, practicing with his capture stylus, all that noise. It was boring, but it was better than nothing. Kevin was just glad he passed the exam. After those gruesome months of training, he wasn't sure he was going to be accepted, but when he heard the good news and was presented with his new uniform and capture stylus, he almost jumped with joy! His first instructions were to make his way to Littleroot Town and see Professor Birch, who would have his new partner ready for him. Then he would start patrolling up and down Route 101, getting to know his new pokemon partner.
Cocoa brown eyes glanced down at the pokeball that was attached to his belt. After a deep breath, he pulled the red and white capsule off his belt and pressed the center button, releasing the pokemon inside. The female cottonee, who he had dubbed Aethra, yawned and rubbed the sleep from her eyes before looking up at Kevin with curiosity. "Let's go for a walk, Aethra." The little pokemon's chitter of excitement made the ranger smile. The route stretched out before the two of them, tall grass and huge trees all that the eye could see.
Petilil spotted the telltale ranger's outfit from a fair distance and shyly began following the human. Rangers, from what she'd been told by her mother, were lovely humans who were always helping out wild pokémon and never expecting anything in return.
"P-Peti...!!" The small grass type piped up from behind the ranger as she plucked off one of the leaves from atop her head, trying to catch his attention.
The fronds of tall grass brushed against the black khaki of his pants, his orange hiking boots squishing into the soft, fertile soil. He was careful to watch where he stepped - didn't want to hurt any bug pokemon! Once Kevin and Aethra could see the end of route 101 in front of them, the two stopped and looked around. "Everything looks good," the ranger said with a shrug. "Want to head back to town now?"
The cottonee looked up at her trainer, wiggling the leaves that protruded from each side of her body. She could sense something, but what was it? In that moment, a noise came from behind the pair, startling them. They both turned to see a little petilil peeking out from the tall grass, one of it's leaves held between it's nubby little hands. It didn't seem aggressive; in fact, it was rather shy. Kevin crouched down to the little pokemon's level, smiling. "Hi there, you okay?" Aethra brazenly hopped closer to the pokemon, curious and unafraid.
The leaf began to tremble nervously in her hands once the ranger crouched down in front of her. She wasn't the best judge of human beauty but this one certainly looked pleasant.
"P-P-P... P-P...!!" She stuttered helplessly, her whole tiny body tensing up and a deep rose colour invading her cheeks. Unable to utter a word, the timid but kind petilil held out the leaf she'd plucked insistently, offering it to the ranger. The leaves from atop a petilil's head were bitter but refreshed whoever consumed them; for a ranger who'd work outside all day, it seemed like an appropriate gift.
It was almost endearing how timid the little pokemon was. And it was very surprising that the petilil approached him, let alone offered him a gift. Kevin reached out a hand slowly, so as not to startle the grass pokemon, and took the leaf from her, breaking it in half. One half he put in his mouth, chewing on it and trying to ignore the bitter juice that coated his tongue; the other half was handed to Aethra, who just about swallowed the offered leaf whole. She made a face of surprise at how bitter it was, but tried not to show her distaste in fear of insulting the other pokemon.
"Thank you," Kevin said once he had swallowed the leaf, feeling a nice boost of energy from it. He eyed up the little green pokemon once more, his curiosity getting the better of him. Would she even understand him if he asked to battle her and have her join his team? He figured it was worth a shot. "Did you want to join my team, petilil?"
D-Did she want to join... his team? The petilil's eyes grew wide at the ranger's proposal. She'd always admired those human workers who seemed to coexist with nature and pokémon alike... an idealist she may seem but she was still a very young and impressionable young creature.
"P-Petilil!" She chirruped enthusiastically, her stubby little arms waving about at the sides of her petite body. She nodded with considerable vigor in response to the ranger's question.
Petilil is friendly! Petilil agreed to go along with Ranger Kevin! Petilil can be captured!

Aethra's reaction was utter joy. The cottonee bounced up and down excitedly, her ears wiggling. Kevin chuckled and patted the cotton pokemon on the head, and pulled one of the unused pokeballs out of his bag, holding it out in front of the petilil. "Then welcome to the team, petilil. We'll come up with a nice name for you later." With a click of a button, the blue energy reached out and wrapped around the wild pokemon, transporting it into the pokeball. Kevin waited for the telltale "click!" of a successfully captured pokemon before he clicked the button again, letting his newly caught petilil back out of it's pokeball. The ranger stood up, still smiling slightly, and looked between his two partners. "Let's go get some food."
