hello calamity! we're nearing the two months mark in a few weeks. how time flies! right now we have two things going on that need your participation. the first is an activity check! it is impotant that you check in so you don't lose your face claim. the second is the otm nomiations! we're doing it a bit different than last time. so please submit your nominations in. a vote thread will be up in the next few days. there will also be a formal event coming very soon, so keep your eye out for that. keep being cool!
we're currently about to host calamity's first contest in slatepor. trainers are flocking to the city to see, the city's been trying to get good pr since the gala, and it seems to be working! they're asking for both coordinators and volunteer judges to sign up.

Rustboro City, a hub of education and knowledge. The trainer school, the scholar gym leader, and the Devon Institute, all in one spot, all operating at the same time. It was like a dream come true for Gwen. So much knowledge at her fingertips and the only question being where to begin. Her new interest in battles made her partial to visit the trainer school first, but there were bigger issues to explore.
"Devon Corp, currently exploring fossils and what they can tell us of pokemon of the past," Gwen read the lines off of their website, brought up on her pokenav. Today she wanted to make her way to their building and see if she could look at their research first hand. Naturally she'd explain it was to explore the link between flying types and their wide range of appearances and habitats. Really though she wanted to see what they could tell her about a particular legendary.
Groudon, the legendary responsible for most -- if not all -- landmasses in Hoenn. Bitter rival to Kyogre and -- more likely than not -- the key to Magma's success. If they could figure out where the pokemon was and how to harness its strength it would be almost impossible to stop them from drying up the seas. Nothing aside from Kyogre that was, not that Gwen figured it would be a problem that needed addressing.
"So, it's north until. . ." she murmured to herself, following a route she'd tried to mark before appearing in the city. Before she could ask anything she had to find her way to the building.
fidel carried the pouch somewhat carefully. of course, she knew that there was a glass casing protecting the egg, but she still didn't want to get anything wrong. after all, what if she throws the egg? or drops the egg? or shakes the egg!? shaking the egg would be really bad! don't shake the egg!
caught in her egg which she received shortly after the gala, fidel didn't exactly see the oncoming woman who was making her way towards devon corp. all her eyes were focused on was the green and white oval in front of her, trying to see if it was shaking or jumping around or something.
so, when she almost, read, almost bumped into the woman, she was somewhat shocked. it wasn't a total anime bump, and gwen didn't become her loving senpai quite yet, but fidel had to take a step back as the woman came her way. "woah, sorry! i didn't see you there, lady!" fidel apologized, before her eyes wandered to her egg once more.
This was the thing about cities. Gwen hated small towns. Hated the familiarity, the random strangers, and the sense that everything was just so empty. The quiet was nice but the tendency by locals to break it was not so. The opposite was true of the city.
No one would step out of line to introduce themselves in the city, or intrude on you for a "how do you do?". More often than not they cared little for your existence and less for what you were doing, but it didn't matter because noise was everywhere and people were everywhere. And when people were everywhere you couldn't factor in every single one in your way. So accidents happened, and almost running into this girl definitely classified.
For a moment Gwen felt herself swell up. A single deep breath, a rise of cold eyes, and she was ready to ream out the girl for nearly ramming into her. But then Gwen saw her face and realized her age, and then the young girl apologized. Instantly, with a clear voice and a sincerity she hadn't expected from someone hustling in a city street. But then her eyes wandered from her to the egg, and then Gwen's eyes wandered from her to the egg.
"Not a problem," when she spoke she sounded inattentive, drawn in by the focus of the young girl's attention. Eggs had always held a special fascination for Gwen. They were second only to fossils really, but just as worth her attention.
fidel held her breath. she'd seen that type of anger before. breathe in, look like you're about to kill someone. she'd faced down mightyena, irate scizor, fought various wild pokemon, and raised her own gyarados. she may not be a good trainer, but she'd like to think that she was okay with people. and this person... this person was about to attack her.
fidel took a step back, keeping the egg nestled close to her body. she might need to run soon, if this woman didn't back down. there was a clear look of wariness on fidel's face as the woman had that flash of anger, but the girl was surprised when the woman calmed down.
"y-yeah..." this lady... she switched emotions like a flash! this was definitely some type of actress, or politician, or somebody who was real good at lying like that. her grip on her egg softened, but she still felt that underling fight-or-flight running through her veins. given she had both hands on the egg, it was probably flight.
the threat wasn't there. well, for now. so fidel decided it'd be okay to try and share stuff about the egg to try and make the conversation a bit more normal again. "its, uh, a treeko egg! i got it after the gala in slateport. man, that gala was crazy..." fidel said, but didn't elaborate on it. [treeko egg, second mention.]
"Treecko," the word came out quietly, a whisper to herself as she went through all that she knew of the pokemon, "Wood Gecko pokemon, rare, very rare." Gwen couldn't help but wonder where the girl had got the egg. She would have assumed Birch, he had a tendency to hand out strong pokemon to young trainers, but usually they were hatched. Already out and about and ready to explore with their vigorous companion. Not this one. Then she mentioned the gala.
"I heard there was some trouble there," Gwen mentioned it casually, softly and in an undemanding voice. She hadn't heard anything, she knew something had happened there. The Gala had been privy to a disastrous attempt by her faction to cause some kind of uproar. A failed assault by Team Magma. She wished she had been there, maybe her guidance could have helped some. Maybe this pokemon would be theirs. Not that she would take it from this girl. She was far above stealing from children.
Still, Gwen couldn't help but wonder what this girl's involvement had been. She was a trainer, but how tough? Had she been one of those who'd foiled their attack? That would be embarrassing. Not just embarrassing, pathetic. To be beat back by the likes of children on top of the trainers already there. It would be an even bigger mark on the team's name than the failure was in teh first place.
thing is, fidel's a child. she isn't really that familiar with the idea of keeping secrets really well. so, when the lady mentioned it, she was pretty excited to share what happened. after all, gyarados evolved and everything, and from that, so much changed. "yeah, i was there!" she beamed.
"there were these weird guys in red that pulled out some really strong pokemon. they didn't seem nice, but everyone at the gala started fighting back!" fidel frowned, remembering the next part. "i had to hide behind a table most of the time, since a mightyena came and tried to hurt me."
not good memories. she was pretty scared for her life at that moment. but she went on in vigor as she remembered the big event that made her night. "but then my pokemon evolved into gyarados, and we beat up the mightyena and started beating up everyone else too! it was awesome, and those red guys ran away!"
the girl had stars in her eyes, remembering her past victories. really, any victory put stars in her eyes, especially the ones she made. ever so trusting, she even extended an offer to the magma member. "oh, you wanna meet gyarados? it doesn't bite, i promise!"
A child's honesty and energy was something Gwen enjoyed. Not so much for the energy or honesty, but for the ease in which you could draw answers from a child on just about anything. In this case all of the events that she'd already heard came tumbling out, alongside a couple she hadn't. Most notably her fear that the team had lost to her, though her possession of a Gyarados made it slightly -- slightly -- less embarrassing.
"Do you know anyone who was fighting back? I'm sure they had to be awfully brave," she spoke, moving her eyes from the Treecko egg to the girl's face and smiling as if she was enjoying the story. Inside she was raging. How could these foolish grunts go about sullying the good name of Team Magma by raiding galas and losing fights to children? What kinds of idiots were they?
"Aside from you of course," she followed up, acknowledging the fact that the girl in front of her had fought, "Though I'd still like to know your name, just so I can congratulate you properly." Still she smiled as she spoke, a faux gesture that was a little bit too tight along the edges. It was foreign to her, such a full, beaming expression, but she wore it regardless.
When the girl offered to show Gwen her Gyarados she couldn't help but accept the offer. Especially since, if she said no, the girl could leave otherwise. So when the question was asked Gwen simply nodded, sure that she could get more from the girl after properly meeting her pokemon.
"okay, come out gyarados!" she took out the poke ball from her pocket, bringing the atrocious pokemon out in the middle of the city. the residents paused for a moment, before deciding it was probably a battle or some other event. that was the effect of having a gym leader in the city, one may suppose.
gyarados gave it's usual greeting roar, but upon looking at the woman, it seemed a little suspicious, shaking it's head like a dog. fidel caught onto it, but didn't say anything. gyarados then eyed gwen darby scrupulously, causing fidel to ask some inner questions to herself.
gyarados didn't trust this lady... maybe she should be more careful, talking to strangers. she knew that gyarados, like lots of other pokemon, saw things that humans didn't. she'd have to be careful with her words, then. but she couldn't let the lady know anything about it! she'll just stay the same without saying too much.
"ah, gyarados is still kinda twitchy, aren't you, gyarados?" it gave a low growl. fidel nodded. "it just evolved recently, and we lost a lot at first. anywho, my name's fidelita!" she used her full first name; nobody used her full first name, not really.
"and... i didn't really get their names. i just know there were a lot of teenagers and younger adults there. like, the-guys-who-go-to-college type of old." she mused. "and to be honest, i wouldn't say they were awfully brave. after all, it seemed like everyone was a trainer in some way, shape, or form, and i think we outnumbered them two-to-one! those weird guys in red really need to know their numbers..."
