[attr="class","axscroll"]Freedom. He finally had freedom. Axel honestly couldn't believe it. Once he docked in Slateport City and hustled his way down to Littleroot Town, Axel felt like a new person. He didn't have brothers to worry about, he didn't have to worry about biting his tongue all the time (although, old habits are hard to break) and he didn't have to worry about cooking his own meals either. However, his adrenaline rush subsided when he came out of the lab with the Chespin's Pokeball in hand.
Axel stared at the Pokeball thoughtfully as he walked his way over to the route. "So... a Chespin." He said quietly. From first glance, the Pokemon looked... weird. Don't get him wrong, Axel wouldn't purposefully throw a Pokemon away simply because he didn't like it, but he wasn't a huge fan of his first Pokemon so far. With a rather confused look, Axel shrunk the Pokeball and attached it to his belt. He wasn't really sure what he could do with this Pokemon, let alone what IT could do. As far as Axel knew, it was a grass type. He knew what moves it had, but other than that Axel had no clue what the Pokemon was capable of. And in hindsight... he really had no clue what he was doing either.
At this thought, Axel paused and stared at the route ahead of him. "I'm pretty much clueless, aren't I?" He said out loud, staring in front of him. However, despite that, Axel grinned slightly and held his head high. "This is gonna be fun." With his new found confidence, Axel brought out the Chespin's Pokeball and released the grass type.
The Chespin stood in front of Axel now, shaking its fur and glancing up at him. She tilted her head and stared, wondering why she was called out. Axel stared back at her with the same curious expression. Beforehand, he had never seen or really touched a Pokemon up close. He bent down to its level and offered his hand. "Hey, so I'm your Trainer now. Uh, do you wanna nickname?" The Chespin blinked and stared at Axel's hand. To anyone else, this probably looked weird.
The air is cleaner anywhere that isn't Fallarbor. Nobody else in the world had to live in volcanic ash filled air and that's one of the main reasons why Nick left town like she did. For that, she's grateful to have tasted clean air for the first time in her life (despite the chronic coughing characteristic of the people who live near Mount Chimney). Verdanturf was especially clean too, and Nick wishes she could live there one day.
But that can wait. There are more pressing matters to attend to, like fighting the elite four and champion.
Nick whistles, and a fluffy cloud of a bird tackles her face. After some cursing and flailing around, Puffball settles nicely into Nick's hood. The trainer grumbles about how nice it must be to be so small and fluffy and not give a damn about anything at all.
"C'mon Puffball," the trainer groans, "sit on my shoulder like a normal bird."
The swablu merely chirps in reply and stubbornly sits in its makeshift nest of some sort. Nick throws up her hands in the air as a sign of surrender and trudges forth from Littleroot Town's famous lab. At least she got a shiny new pokédex.
She spots weird looking pokémon that she's never seen before. And, honestly, it's probably less weird than the cloud bird sitting in Nick's hood right now. Curious, the trainer jogs over to the boy and his weird pokémon and stops before them.
"Yo," she greets with a small wave, "wat'cha got there? I never seen one of those things 'round here before."

[attr="class","axscroll"]Unaware of the approaching Trainer, Axel continued to stare at the Chespin. The Pokemon had agreed to a nickname, but he wasn't sure what. "Uh... what about Rose?" Axel suggested. The Chespin stuck her tongue out, obviously not happy with the nickname. Scratching his head, Axel tried to think of a different nickname. He didn't want it to be weird, or cliche. "What about... Holly?" He suggested again. The Chespin paused and brought a paw to her chin, thinking about the name before nodding her head in approval. The new Trainer smiled and stood up. "Awesome, Holly it is."
It wasn't until Axel stood up that he realized someone had came up to him and Holly. His green eyes glanced upward and at the young woman in front of him.
Yo. Wat'cha got there? I never seen one of those things 'round here before."
Axel pointed at Holly, eyes blinking. "Her? Well, according to the Professor, it's a Chespin." Axel explained. The newly nicknamed Chespin walked in front of Axel and waved up at the human with a big grin on her face. For one reason or another, Axel got the feeling that this Chespin had a big personality. "I've kinda got to admit, I wasn't a big fan of her before. She might grow on me though." That got Holly upset. The Chespin turned around and stared up at Axel with a pouty face, turning around and crossing her arms with a huff. Axel rolled his eyes. Oh yeah, this Chespin was going to be fun to deal with. She was a total drama queen.
With that out of the way, Axel offered his hand to the young woman. "Name's Axel, nice to meet you. Did you just get your first Pokemon too?"He said with a small smile. It wasn't until then that Axel noticed there was something in the girl's hood. He leaned to the side, arm still out stretched and looking past the girl's head. "Is that a bird in your hood?" Axel asked, a hint of amusement in his voice. And he thought his Pokemon looked weird. Didn't birds usually sit on shoulders?
Nick smiles genially as she introduces herself and shakes Axel's hand. She also waves hi to the friendly, and quite possibly dramatic, chespin. It looks strong, maybe grow up to be a menace in the battlefield one day. It's hilarious how many people underestimate grass types.
"You keep an eye on 'er progress," Nick advises, "you might have a fierce fighter on yer team."
She snorts when Axel looks past her and sees the cloudy bird dozing in her hood.
"Naw, I've had this li'l one for years now." Nick says, reaching behind her to pet Puffball's soft feathers. "Don't mind 'er, she usually does that when she's tired or wants to take a nap."
Or when Puffball wants to be a menace and just doesn't want to do anything. The swablu chirps happily as if contradicting her entire statement. Time to switch gears.
"Where're you headed anyway?" Nick asks. "I'm headed down to Route 101, see if there's any pokémon I can catch."

[attr="class","axscroll"]Axel had to take a double check on his Chespin. He wasn't too sure about Nick's prediction. Right now, Holly didn't look so intimidating. Then again, he didn't really know what Holly was going to evolve into. There was a chance the grass type would grow on him, but right now, he wasn't feeling too attached to her. That could change in the future though, Axel was going to give her a chance. But if he had a good trade...
His attention was drawn back to Nick once she spoke, saying that the bird did that occasionally when tired. "What kind of Pokemon is that anyway? I've never seen one before." Axel asked. At this point, any Pokemon that wasn't a Pikachu or a Chespin was new to him. Of course he had seen a few species on TV or in magazines but he couldn't really remember their names. He'd learn the names on the go though. After all, he just started.
"Oh, I'm actually heading down to 101 as well. I'm gonna head over to Oldale Town and head over to Petalburg asap. I'm hoping to find some cool Pokemon down 101. Don't get me wrong, I like my Chespin but she looks kinda weak. So I wanna start getting a team together and hit the gym circuit." Axel said with a confident grin. He was getting a little too confident right now, but who could blame him? He was excited and just couldn't contain his excitement. He needed to talk to someone about it!
She can see the doubt in the boy's eyes. Nick frowns slightly, but she doesn't say another word on the matter. It's on him if the guy decides to trade his starter in and misses out in the later run.
Nick pauses to narrow her eyes at his question. That's strange. Swablu and altaria flocks travel everywhere, so anyone in Hoenn can see them from time to time. And, according to the pokédex, swablu can seen in regions as far as Kalos (not that she's ever heard of a place called Kalos, but she figures it's a pretty far-off region of sorts). How has this kid never seen one before?
"Puffball's a swablu," she says carefully, "you see them flyin' 'round these parts from time to time."
Nick can feel her eyebrows rise to her hairline. Everyone knows the first gym's full of rock types. You don't really need to prepare much for that gym anyway. This guy should have no trouble soloing with just a grass type. Or, maybe it's just Nick who thinks like that. Anyhow, she's found herself another competitor.
"Yer gonna challenge the gym circuit too?" Nick states more than asks. "Looks like we'll be seein' each other sometime soon, huh?"

[attr="class","axscroll"]"Ohh, got'cha. Sorry, I'm not from the Hoenn region." Axel admitted. He felt a little foolish now. There was little to no chance he would recognize any of the Hoenn native Pokemon. Maybe in the next town he'd stop and start researching the native Pokemon. Then again, he could have just used his Pokedex to figure out that the Pokemon was a Swablu... Whoops.
A grin formed on Axel's face when the girl mentioned she was going to challenge the circuit too. "Really? Heh, it'll be nice to see some familiar faces around." Axel said. "Oh, by the way, I didn't get your name before. I think it's only fair since I told you mind." Axel joked. He wasn't really expecting to meet anyone just yet. In Axel's head, he planned on just zipping through Route 101 and making his way over to Oldale before dashing over to Petalburg. Although, Axel wasn't against meeting other people and making some acquaintances here and there. Maybe even a rival or two would be fun. At least in his head anyway.
"Guess we will be seeing each other a lot more. You're probably gonna be one step ahead of me though, you sound like you're from Hoenn." Axel stated. By the sounds of it, it seemed like the girl was from Hoenn. And if she wasn't, well then she seemed to know a lot more than Axel did. The more and more he talked to this girl, the more he felt a little... clueless. However, he found it fun learning about being a Trainer. It was a new experience, and he was thoroughly enjoying himself so far.
"Ohh, that explains it." No wonder the kid looked so lost.
"M'name's Nick." She says with a small smile. He seems real excited about that whole gym rat race. Too bad he's gonna get his ass kicked I mean, he sure seems clueless about stuff around here. It's almost cruel to leave him alone like this-- someone's gotta help the poor kid out.
But she ain't gonna be one of those suckers, not today.
"All the more reason to watch out.I wish ya luck, kid." Nick reaches out and pats Axel's shoulder. "Yer gonna need it."
She gives him another friendly smile that contradicts her almost-threat.

[attr="class","axscroll"]Axel's eyes followed the girl as she reached out and pet his shoulder, giving an almost threatening statement with a condescending smile. He blinked at her and had to take a moment to think about that. The smile was more so a warning than it was a happy smile, and Axel wasn't sure what to make of it. And what she said before, it sounded like a threat. Did she already consider him a rival? Or did she just think he was gonna be clueless for the rest of this journey because he wasn't from Hoenn? Either way, he was starting to get a bad impression of the girl.
"Thanks." Axel said flatly. "But you don't need to worry so much about me, I'm a quick learner. I'll be catching up to everyone soon enough, so if anyone needs luck it's probably you." And there it was. Axel getting way over confident again. In the back of his mind, Axel's sane conciousness screamed at him for being an idiot. If Nick took that as an invite to battle, he was fucked. Holly was a grass type, that Swablu was a flying type. The chances of winning that battle were slim. So, his voice of reason took over and told Axel to start moving his ass out of there.
"Well, I'm gonna head out now. So it was nice meeting you Nick. Maybe the next time we meet will be in Rustboro. If you're there in time, maybe I'll show you my badge. Catch ya later!" Axel said with a smirk before nodding his head and turning to head down Route 101.
Nick's smile turns a tad sharper at Axel's bluff. So, he has a huge ego. It'll be fun running into him again when she hits Rustboro. Besides, she's gonna need more than Puffball if she wants to take on that gym. (Maybe a lotad? Marill? She should look into pokémon who learn fighting type moves too.) From the way the kid's like right now, all she can assume is that he talks big. She briefly wonders if he can back that up.
"My, my, I sure hope so," she returns, "because here I thought you were gonna struggle for awhile. Newcomers don't tend to fare so well."
As he's leaving, still talking trash, Nick loses the smile but gives the kid a friendly wave. "You too, Axel. Hope we meet again soon."
