Kohaku huffed a small breath as he left the inn he was currently staying in, a small yawn escaping as he stretched out a bit. He was exhausted, the past few days a little taxing especially with almost having a close call with Scheherazade in that freak rain only a few days ago. He was relieved that was over though that was for sure and she seemed to be completely recovered from the whole incident so he was trying not to dwell over it. His mind briefly flickered to other occasions…meeting people he never thought he’d see again before he brushed it off. He didn’t want to think about them right now…not when it meant he had to think about other things. Like the letter that had brought him here or the condition he’d left his mother in and the letter she’d received from that man.
He ran a frustrated hand through his fuchsia locks and growled lightly, hating when he was in these kinds of moods. He took a deep breath and tried to ignore it as he forced his mind to switch to something else…like the blonde he’d met that rainy day. A slight smile curled his lips and he shook his head, rolling his eyes at himself and the warmth that filled his chest. Seriously he was far too gullible sometimes it was embarrassing. His attention briefly turned towards the sky and the different colors painted on it as sunset began to take its hold. Most of the day had been spent training and preparing for his battle in Petalburg…soon he’d start attempting to catch other pokemon though. It was only natural especially since he wanted to get a good group put together for their battles.
The cherry-pink haired young man blinked when he realized he was suddenly in front of a café and he gave it a considering look. He didn’t have any of his equipment on him today having decided to go out looking like a regular young man instead of a trainer so that no one would try to pick a battle with him. It was good and all but sometimes he got a little tired of the constant fights. So today he was dressed in harem pants, black slippers and a dark blue mandarin collared shirt with golden bracelets adorning his wrists. It wasn’t something he commonly wore but it was something he was far more comfortable in and used to wearing from his days back home. Humming lightly to himself he debated going in before he noticed something from the corner of his eyes.
Unthinkingly he turned just enough to see clearly what had caught his eyes and it brought a slightly smile to his face. He wasn’t sure if the person had noticed him, but even if they hadn’t he figured he might as well say hi since this was the second time he was seeing him. Chuckling lightly he took a step towards the person, folding his hands behind his back as he called out. “We really should stop meeting like this.”
cain doesn't really eat much. not only is he always short on money, but he doesn't really have a big appetite in the first place. he can get by with starving every once in a while, but he grabs every opportunity at a free meal and holds it close. recently he's gotten a little extra money on hand, so he supposes a splurge isn't such a big deal.
he's waiting in line when he feels a tap on his shoulder. cain turns, spotting the flash of red hair. a smile instantly lights up his face. "hey, ko!" seeing him makes his day. he was one of the people he misses the most.
"here for some coffee?" he asks, moving forward in the line. he quickly spouts off his order. it's just a drink for cain today, no food. heck -- he has extra money, why not spend it on his friend, too?
"hey," he says, nudging him in the shoulder. he winks, "this is a date right? coffee's on me."

Kohaku probably should have realized they’d be bumping into each other more often if they were now in the same region again but…with the way Cain had pulled a disappearing act in Johto he couldn’t be blamed for thinking it’d happen again. So when he’d seen his familiar head of blonde hair he’d been unable to resist greeting him and basking in the elation that they had met again even if it hadn’t been intentional. Of course the smile he was greeted with took him a little off guard and he paused, blinking his shock for a moment before he looked away. Following behind the blonde as he moved in line and reminding himself not to think too much of that far too bright smile…It was Cain and the idiot was probably just happy to see him again. Huffing almost inaudibly at how similar this truly was to High School he decided all he needed was for Sam to be around so he could go complaining and flirting to him. Rolling his eyes at himself he focused back on Cain and what he was asking.
Shrugging his shoulders lightly the petite male chirped, “I was actually kind of debating it before I noticed you.” Of course it kind of made his decision easier seeing as the male was here for coffee himself and he listened to him order before being surprised. The nudge gets Cain an indulgent look before he blinked at his words, a little laugh tumbling from his lips and he shook his head a little. Pretending to think about it for a bit he drawled out, “I suppose I did say I’d reward you with a date if I saw you again.” Sticking his tongue out playfully Kohaku quipped playfully, “Coffee will do.” He threw his order in there as well, a regular coffee light and sweet because he could never stand the bitterness of it. He tucked a fuchsia lock behind his ear and glanced at the blonde from the corner of his eyes before gesturing to one of the tables nearby, “Do you want to sit while they bring us the coffee?”
The petite male folded his hands behind his back as he looked Cain over thoughtfully, “Twice in a matter of days…Are we going to make this a habit?” There was a hint of tease in his voice but also honest curiosity. He’d honestly missed his best friend and if he could have the chance at being around him again he’d gladly take it, especially when he remembered the other had been hiding something. It left him rather concerned considering everything he’d heard back home…and how much trouble he knew Cain could get himself into.
it feels just like johto again. cain couldn't help but laugh. he looks around, expecting sam to jump in and give him some shit or for leah to make another sharp retort. but it's just them in the cafe, and cain finds that he doesn't really mind.
he's glad that ko lets him buy coffee. cain walks up to the counter and hands the last of his bills to the cashier, soberly glancing at the change in his hands before pocketing it and moving on.
"yeah, that works." he murmers, and makes his way towards one of the tables. cain pulls out a chair and slides into the side opposite of ko. he leans forward, resting his chin on his hands.
"i wouldn't mind." cain laughs and winks. it's refreshing to finally see a friendly face. he may be in aqua, but that wouldn't stop him from seeing his best friend. it dependson how much ko wants to see him.
It’s comfortable between them and Kohaku almost can’t believe how easy it is to slip back into habits with Cain. It’s almost like they never stopped seeing each other even if in the back of his mind there was always the doubt lingering, wondering if the blonde male would just up and disappear again but he figures he just won’t think about that quite yet. No point worrying about the future and all especially when all he wants is to bask in his best friend’s presence once more, especially when he was only too willing to talk to him once more. He liked how there was no awkwardness between them and he honestly couldn’t remember a time that there was ever awkwardness between them.
He mimics Cain’s position, also leaning forward and resting his chin on his palm as he watches the blonde with an amused smile. Kohaku quirked a playfully eyebrow at the other male, daring him to point it out before Cain spoke up and he gave him a playfully coy look. Batting long eyelashes at the silly blonde he murmured, “You wouldn’t, huh~ Now Cain careful or someone might think you’re smitten.”
Kohaku made a playful but thoughtful humming sound as though he had to think about Cain’s question seriously, tapping his cheek in a manner that made it look like he was thinking. Fuschia gaze falling to the other as he said innocently, “Maybe I don’t…maybe I do. Depends~” His words had a teasing edge to them, his nose crinkling as he smiled mischievously. He sobered the slightest when a waiter came and dropped off their drinks and he hummed happily as he took his first careful sip. It was warm and the taste was exquisite much to his delight since it was exactly how he usually liked it.
cain easily falls into the back and forth banter that they've always had. that's what cain always does. it's like he could pick up were they left off, despite however many years that haven't seen each other. he did it with leah and sam, he guesses that he can do it with ko, too. he hasn't changed much at all, which cain appreciates. because he hasn't, either.
his face lights up in a grin when ko slides into the seat across from him, mimicking his posture. he even winks back for good measure. he laughs at the absurdity, because for best friends they were always flirting a lot. maybe it's a bromance, or whatever people call it these days, but there's no denying that they have a strong bond.
"what, i can't joke with my friend?" he says, clicking his tongue twice. he's totally unaware of ko's attraction towards him. to cain, they're perfectly platonic. he whines at ko's answer, "awww, but i always look forward to seeing you." he mock-pouts, folding his arms together and looking at him with big eyes.
it's then that the waiter comes, eyeing them suspiciously. cain only smiles at them as they deliver their drinks. each cup is placed in front of them in professional matter, and they leave without a trace. he rips open a packet of sugar and dumps all of it in. cain takes a sip of his own coffee. the drink is decadent, filled with earthy and bitter tones, but with just enough sugar cain enjoy the drink to its full extent.

Kohaku rolled his eyes fondly at his friend when Cain winks at him, warmth spreading sluggishly through his chest at how good this feels. To just sit and joke like nothing was wrong, like things back home never happened and everything was fine. Yes, there was that lingering sense of worry Cain would disappear again and that rush of adrenaline at what would happen if the other boy found out he had a crush on him but same like he’d always done when they were younger. Kohaku ignored those feelings in turn of just enjoying his best friend’s company cause no matter what Cain had never lost that title. He’d been his first friend back at school, the only one who’d accepted him and his broken English when they’d met while Kohaku was still struggling with the language as well as trying to find his place. He wondered briefly if he ever thanked is friend for that…he didn’t think he did but he’d rectify that soon enough.
The fuchsia haired young man lets out a bark of laughter as he leans back in his seat, shaking his head at his friend’s antics. Smiling warmly he murmured, “Of course you can joke with me~ Careful though, I might get greedy.” The ending turning into a playful lilt even though hidden behind the playfulness there was some truth. He would always be greedy and possessive when it came to Cain. It’d been the same when they were in school but he’d been careful and hadn’t been obvious, especially when he’d learned how Cain felt about Leah. It was well known she swung for the opposite field but…it’d still hurt to see Cain like someone else but that mattered little now. He’d be content with Cain’s friendship just as he’d always been and accept things for what they were. At Cain’s whine, he was brought out of his thoughts and Kohaku could only roll his eyes, chuckling softly at his antics. “Fine, fine you silly man. I love nothing more than seeing you.” His heart fluttered lightly at how true those words were, at how closely they spoke of his feelings but the playful way he said them hid the truth. It was still nerve wracking however but he pushed the thoughts away.
He was only too happy to ignore the waiter’s looks for the coffee given to him, letting out a little hum of happiness as he took a sip of the sweet, sweet drink. His eyes briefly flickered to Cain, watching in vague amusement as he added some sugar to his but that was all and the young man’s nose crinkled as he made a face. However, at Cain’s question he smiled warmly and nodded in confirmation. “Definitely good and warm too.” He let out a thoughtful noise before allowing his gaze to fall on the young man in front of him curiously, “Have you met anyone else?? Or at least seen anyone from the club days before…”…Before Ai disappeared. Were the unspoken words that he allowed to trail away. They’d all been close but after Ai just…vanished they’d all fallen away from each other and it hadn’t helped that he had already graduated by the time this all happened so he still didn’t know the full details.
ko rolls his eyes at his antics, like he always does when he's hanging around cain. it's a welcome sight compared to what he's been doing recently. aqua may have many members, but most aren't willing to be friends. they're off chasing their goals and ambitions. cain, however, is just content with living life. he's only apart of it for the benefits. it's a little lonely, but these precious moments with ko and leah are all that counts.
cain leans back against the chair. his eyebrows lift in surprise, half mocking, half serious. "a little possessive aren't you?" cain snickers. he's never noticed that ko was a little greedy. he's someone who likes to go with the flow, hanging around people that he just ended up with. ko always seems to be with him, as well as leah. that's how he formed a crush on her, after all. he sighs. leah's the one that got away.
"same here, it's really nice to see you." he smiles. it's genuine. cain doesn't really care if that makes him sappy or cheesy. he's just glad to finally get to talk to someone who didn't just brush him off for a druggie. someone he can finally joke with and share coffee with.
cain visibly deflates when ai's mentioned. he still misses her, a lot. she was the glue to the house, so when she disappeared, all that was left were unanswered questions and people who barely knew what to do with each other anymore. the house of cards collapsed, leaving each person to go their seperate ways.

For the first time in a while, everything about his feelings aside, Kohaku feels carefree almost like he once was back home. It was exhilarating and he murmurs softly, unthinkingly. “I’m glad I came here instead of staying back home since I got to see you again.” He still remembered he’d almost not come to Hoenn at all even with his mother’s insistent words and the letter’s prompting. He’d had so much going on he didn’t see how he could have, especially with his mother still recovering from her time being sick. However, now with Cain there he didn’t know how he could have wanted anything else or how he could have almost not come. It was a relief his mother had practically thrown him out the house and ordered him not to come back until he’d had an adventure at the very least and a pokemon master at the very best.
At the look he gets from Cain he ducked his head to both hide his grin and the slight coloring on his cheeks at the blonde’s words. It was true, he was even with normal friends he’d been possessive over for the simple fact that he didn’t have many and it made him infinitely insecure that he’d lose them all one day. Ko gazed at him from under his lashes in mock innocence as he said, “How could you ask that? Of course I’m not possessive. I just missed my best friend, is all. I’m allowed.” There was a hint of tease in his mockingly hurt tone, laughter glinting in his fuchsia eyes before he tucked a strand of hair behind his ear distractedly, a smile playing along his lips now that he couldn’t hold it back.
Kohaku hadn’t been prepared for Cain’s words or his smile, it drew his more serious side forward and his grin softened to a warm smile as he reached over to lay a hand on Cain’s. “It’s really nice to see you too. I…was worried when I didn’t see or hear from you anymore. Don’t do that to me again…please.” He winced at the last words, not liking laying himself bare but Cain was and had always been someone he could trust especially with his more private emotions.
The return of his question makes Ko look away, his eyes drifting to the window as his mind flashes back to when he’d thought he’d caught glimpses of familiar looking people. However, he’d never had the courage to go up and see if he’d been right. Cain and a select few within the club had been the only ones he’d really spoken too so…he’d rather wait and see than go forward and be rejected by people he had once called friends. The petite male shrugged his shoulders, still glancing away from Cain as he murmured. “Not really…I thought I saw a few people but...well I never really pursued it to see.” His gaze slanted back towards the blonde as he gave him a calculating look remembering briefly the pause he’d given when they’d first met again.
"me too." cain sighs, taking a moment to relish in ko's warm company. cain came her because of the letter, but other than that, he doesn't really have a direction in life. it's just aqua, he guesses. the organization has a lot of things going for it -- he has friends, even. there's shelter. there's occasionally some food. it's not as bad and evil as he thought it'd be.
cain's joking, of course, but he can spot the little blush on ko's cheeks when he mentions it. he didn't think it would have such an effect on him. ko was a little protective, but he wasn't overly possessive by any means. or at least, that's how cain viewed it. he only laughs it off, because ko did have a point. "yeah, i missed you too." he says.
ko reaches over to lay a hand on cain's. he tenses. he nearly retracts it out of pure instinct, but he knows that ko's safe. he glances over to the side and hunches his shoulders slightly. "alright. i won't..." cain murmurs, knowing full well that he might not be able to keep up on his word. but he couldn't say that he's going on missions with aqua, could he?
the atmosphere is a lot less relaxed then it was before. so ko hasn't really other people either -- or at least, he hasn't tried. safe to say, cain hasn't either. he'd rather not know, for some reason. he's scared to know what happened. whether or not the people that he knew so many years ago were still his friends.
cain licks his cracked lips. he's anxious. the reasons why might sound crazy...but he had nowhere else to go. the letter was just an excuse to get out of the hold he was digging himself, although over here it's not much better. cain hesitantly meets his eyes, hoping that ko wouldn't judge him to much.
"i got a letter. i don't really know why, it's cryptic and weird, but it told me to come to hoenn." cain shrugs, leaving out all of the aqua and drug stuff. he spreads his one hand, suddenly remembering that ko has one clutched in his. he shrugs.

He didn’t miss the way Cain tenses when he reaches to touch his hand or the way he didn’t look at him when he said he wouldn’t. A part of him remembered that the other had done something similar when they’d first met again in that little clearing and he wonders not for the first time what it is exactly that Cain isn’t telling him. It hurts to know that there’s something the blonde isn’t telling him…perhaps doesn’t even trust him with. He supposes it’s only natural considering they’d been separated for quite a few years and they’ve grown up differently no doubt especially if the rumors from back home said anything. It’s upsetting and hard to accept but if they were really going to learn to trust each other like they used to, Kohaku just had to wait until Cain decided to open up to him.
Kohaku is a little surprised by the emotion he finds in Cain’s eyes when the other finally meets his eyes again and the little hairs on his body stand on end. His stomach curling in on itself as he suddenly feels a bit queasy and sick, unease making itself known and this time he’s the one looking away from Cain. However, when the blonde haired male began to speak his head shot up and he looked at Cain wide eyed in surprise. His hairs rising again at how similar that sounded to his own situation although some part of him still wondered about the other parts of Cain that shouldn’t be caused by a simple letter but he wasn’t going to bring attention to that. Not when his situation was so similar when it came to the letter and he wondered about just how similar it was when he decided to speak.
“I…might be in a similar situation then.” He paused, biting his lip and worrying it between his teeth before he continued to speak slowly. “I received a letter as well telling me to come here and…there was a card inside of it.” Ko’s eyebrows furrowed a bit as he looked at the table intently before looking back up at Cain again. “Did yours also have a card??” It left a bitter taste in his mouth, that someone would know about their little family from back in school and use that against them. Use it to lure them all the way to Hoenn…but for what? “Why would someone summon us here?” He hadn’t meant to ask that out loud but now that it was said…Ko was determined to get an answer from whoever it was.
cain cranes his head to look at ko in surprise. he thought ko would find him crazy. everyone else would -- but he guesses that's why ko's here too. cain furrows his eyebrows, trying to remember what role he had in the house of cards.
"yes...i'm the hanged man." he mutters. it's strikingly fitting for someone like him. he's always trapped in a situation. right now he's in aqua, and he can't possibly run from it, not when he's stuck in hoenn. "what are you?" cain asks. there's a flicker of bitterness in his eyes, but there's also curiousity and wonder.
"i'm not sure...but i'm kinda glad they did." he smiles. maybe there's something positive about this situation. he got to see ko again, and he's probably going to see more of his old friends if they've gotten the same letters. he doesn't know why they don't just start talking to each other, or why they're sent on a grand trip to hoenn. maybe they just want to go on another adventure, like the old daysl.
"maybe they just want us to be back together again."
