she didn't know how he could control her so easily. when she arrived at oldale town her hands were still shaky, her heart beating fast. all those memories that she tucked away deep down surfaced with a vengeance.
she needed to forget, if only for one night. she entered the a random old bar on the edge of the small town. it's run down, but it gave off a feeling of familiarity.
by the end of the day cass is throughly drunk. she lays on the counter, rubbing her forehead. her mind is only filled with loud buzzing. it feels kinda nice.
she pulls out her phone, typing it out with sloppy movements. yes, rory. tell that bast-rd how she feels.
heyyyyy. where tf r u. she sends it without a regret. normally her texts are written well. her grammer and spelling is impeccable, but this wasn't the case. her sober side says that there's a small inkling that she might regret this. too bad she's drunk.
luckily he had something to do in oldale before going back to base. chasing after a cold lead on a case he was working on. nothing major. he was nearby oldale, might as well stop by to give it a shot. but the cold lead led him nowhere and how at the end of the day he was stuck in oldale with nothing to do. he was just about ready to leave back for base when he received a text.
once he saw who the sender was he smirked. it was good to know that she kept his number all these years. it was also good to know that his actions had an impact on her earlier today. she was now drunk. and rory could see that. she'd normally type with perfect grammar and spelling. but when she was drunk all of that just went away.
knowing cass she probably went to the first bar she could find. oldale was a small town. there were probably only a few bars. so he went for the shittiest bar he could find on the edge of town. have they been here before? he can't remember.
and there she was. drunk as hell lying down on the counter. classic cass. he walked over to her and gave the bartender a quick smile just to let him know he was friendly.
"time go home, cass."

she doesn't know why she's kept his number all these years. at first cass blocked him, but she finally felt the urge to let go of that and didn't bother to blacklist it when she got a new phone. why did she keep it though? she didn't know. maybe it was for sentimental value. maybe it's because she doesn't want to admit herself that she can't let go.
sh-t. don't think about that. cass tries to throw those thoughts out the window, but she can't help it. it keeps coming back, no matter what she tells herself. whoever told her that getting drunk makes you forgot was a liar.
she hears the familiar voice behind her. rory. ugh, why is he here? she's forgotten completely about text she sent. cass shakes her head, before it lolls to the side.
"mmm nnno. i think i'mm go-ood." she slurs. she flashes a lazy smile at him, leaning her head on interlocking fingers.
well. at least she was smiling now. the first smile he's seen from her in years. he smiled back too, but she was probably too drunk to even process it. it brought back the memories again. them in his apartment getting wasted. they stayed up till like, what, five? he can't remember. that's what alcohol does to you, he guessed.
"you would," he replied. he shook his head and gave the bartender a tip for his troubles. he could bring her back to his apartment now and she won't even know. yes, that's what he'll do.
"come on," he whispered as he grabbed her by the arm and dragged her off her seat. he was careful not to make too much of a commotion. he doesn't want to get accused of taking advantage of her or anything. "my apartment's not too far away."
once she was off her seat he swept her off her feet and headed straight for the door. "you've gotten fatter."

"only because of yyoooou." she accuses. if rory hadn't come and ruined her day it would be swell and fine. now she was just drinking her sorrows. drowning them out. she hates feeling weak. not powerful. not in control.
she's too tired to argue with him, so she slides out of the seat and leans against him, her eyes drooping slightly. "wo-ooah who said i was going to your apartment." she argues, weakly pushing against his chest.
there were bad, bad memories at that place. last time she was there was he last time she saw rory. what happened there would be stay there. she didn't want to go. "nOo he's kidnapping mE." she yells, pushing against his chest.
cass shrieks as he picks her up, but it quickly turns into light laughter. it reminds her of the past. she hasn't been swept off her feet for a while. once she realizes how high up she's from the ground cass quickly wraps her arms around his neck. she squeezes it slightly at his insult. she's the same as she ever was, thank you very much.
"fuuuck you, you're just jealous that you don't get none of this."
rory chuckled nervously when she accused him of being a kidnapper. it only prompted him to leave even quicker. he received a couple of weird looks on the way out. but they were all too drunk to even care. or to do anything. once they left the bar he let out a sigh of relief. "you're crazy," he whispered as he walked towards his apartment.
"maybe i am." he actually kept tabs on her throughout the years. nothing major as it was rather hard to keep track of the magma leader. but only of her apartment. he saw the guys she went on dates with. it upset him.
they finally reached his apartment where he burst through the door and put her down on the couch. he rubbed the back of his head and walked over to turn the tv on.

"you're crazy." she reflects back, weakly. she can't really think of any witty comebacks to him right now. maybe she is crazy. who else would lead team magma? but by logic, rory is crazy too. they're all crazy.
she latches onto him as he takes her out of the bar. "you miss me too, don't you?" she asks, genuinely curious. cass leans her head on him. her hair falls across her face, but she can't really be bothered to care.
cass sees the familiar apartment. he leaves her on the couch. she sits back into the back of the couch. barely a thing's changed from when she was here so long ago. the couch still smells of rory. a couple things have moved, but not much. she takes a deep breathe, staying quiet for a bit. she's sobering up a little. but not much.
cass sits up. leans forward to rest her elbows on her knees. "sooooo what have you been doing all these years?"
he hasn't visited this apartment in quite a while. but that's mostly because he doesn't like oladale. but he remembered the place all too well. it was where the two of them spent most of their teenage years at. and he'll admit, he does miss her. which is one of the reasons why he even followed her in the first place. maybe they could relive those memories now.
"the usual," he replied. he walked over to the kitchen and opened up the fridge. most of the things inside were expired. he reached for a bottle of water and twisted the cap open. he drank it while watching cass. "missing you, mostly."
he could probably do whatever and say whatever and she won't remember it in the morning. he walked back to where the couch was and picked up the remote, falling back onto the couch next to her.
"your favorite movie's still in the dvd player," he said. he switched from the tv programs to the dvd player. and soon the movie came on right where it last stopped. he smiled and looked at her.
"right where we left it."
right before she found out about him cheating as well. but hopefully that wouldn't come to her mind tonight.

"so you actually do misss me." she says. it's more to herself than to rory. cass rubs her face with her hands. where did everything go wrong? she feels the cushion next to her sink from rory's weight. the tv's turned on.
finding nemo. it's her favorite. how ironic - team magma's leader loves a movie about the fish and sea. but she can't help it. she's enchanted by the cute animation. the simple but thoughtful message wrapped into it.
"i'm surprised you remembered." she hasn't watched it in a while. mainly because it brings up bad memories, but when a funny scene with the turtle comes up she can't help but laugh. a genuine one - something she hasn't been able to do for a while.
cass is hesitant. rory's right next to her, but she's drunk. she finally leans back against the couch. his presence feels strangely comforting today. it feels like they were teens again.
"i remember a lot," he replied. he smiled when she laughed. yes, this felt right. this felt just like it did all those years ago. he remembered her favorite meal, her favorite drink, everything. they were close.
her next remark jabbed him in the chest. he could have visited her sooner, right? no, it was never the right time. he's not even sure if now was the right time. he expects a shitstorm when she wakes up in the morning. but he wasn't going to let her leave. not just yet.
"i know."
and with that last statement he kicked his feet up on the coffee table in front of them and leaned back. he reached around to nudge her closer. ah, he missed this.
"sleep well."
he stared at the tv and lowered the volume a bit. he waited until she fell asleep before falling into slumber himself.

despite how much she would deny it, cass remembers too. she knows what he likes, what he dislikes. cass isn't the romantic type, but she would always make time to think of gifts for him. ones that he was sure to like. she sighs, suddenly nostalgic.
it feels good to be back in someone's arms. even if she is drunk. cass is lonely. her long string of failed relationships never feel as good as this. maybe it's because she's drunk. maybe because it's rory. she could never stop thinking of him, especially when she was with other guys. cass has to admit it to herself. she hasn't moved past it.
she snuggles into him. he's warm, and his apartment's always so damn cold. typical of an aqua leader. there's an inkling of her that this is wrong. that no matter what happens, she'll be that feels the most pain. but she can't be bothered to care. alcohol's smothered up her inhibitions.
she pulls her knees up close. it's late. she guesses that it would hurt to fall asleep here. it's better than being out there.
ever since he became leader he has had a tough time sleeping. he hasn't had a good night's rest in forever. tonight was no different. he woke up in the middle of the night. he looked over to the window. hmm, maybe it was very early in the morning. he turned his attention back to the sleeping beauty next to him. she was all cuddled up next to him, her head on his chest. he smiled and gently nudged her off of him. she was out cold.
classic cass. he got up from the sofa and looked at her. she does look rather uncomfortable in that position. he reached down and scooped her up, carrying her in his arms. he walked over to the bedroom and pushed the door open. cuddles was there sleeping on the bed. he gave the growlithe a gesture to make room for cass. which he did. he placed cass gently on the bed and rested her head on the pillow. he pulled a blanket over her and smiled.
then he left, closing the door behind him. time to get donuts. he left the apartment and went to the donut place around the corner. open twenty-four-seven.

she hasn't slept this well in forever. she's dwarfed in the queen size bed in her room. most nights cass rolls, her mind at a constant state of unrest. there's too many things to worry about. she's used to it by now, but when she actually does get a good night's sleep it feels fantastic.
it was a black, dreamless sleep, but she'll take was she can take. cass wakes up to licking at her face. she groans. there's a harsh throbbing in her head. she nd opens her eyes only to see a patch of orange and black fur. she knows it anywhere - cuddles! cass squeals. she hasn't seen him in forever. she laughs, hugging him close and petting him.
but that also means. oh no. everything comes crashing down on her. she went drinking last night - not much else comes to her, but cass knows she's at rory's apartment. she looks around. this was his bed. she was in his bedroom.
"RORY!" she jumps off the bed and yanks open the door. the apartment's void of anything else but her and cuddles. she rubs her throbbing forehead. the world tilts threateningly to the side. oh yeah. hangover.
she stumbles over to the fridge, grabbing a random bottle of water and chugging it down. the apartment hasn't changed at all. figures. cass sits down on the chair, putting her head down on the table. oh geez. what happened last night?
rory mclain 243 ● muse ● did u accdently grab rory's water cass
the owner of the donut place knew him well. he's been here a lot when he was younger. not recently, but oldale was a small town. not my faces to remember. so when rory walked in the owner immediately knew what he wanted. "thanks, pete." he paid for the box of donuts and went on his way.
he got back to the apartment within no time and unlocked the door. he pushed the door open to find cass sitting by the kitchen, her head down on the table. there was also a bottle of water by her. he shook his head as he closed the door behind her and locked it.
"thanks for drinking the last bottle of water. that was mine, by the way," he said. he walked back to the counter and placed the box on the table. he ignored it for now as he pulled up a seat and slid into it.

she doesn't look up at the sound of the door opening. she just hears the sinking feeling feeling of her stomach. or maybe that was hunger. she doesn't know. ugh. rory. she should've left when she had the chance.
"gross, i got your mono." she says. she's just wondering what she did last night. what he did last night. it doesn't feel like he did anything. he's not the type of person to do that, but then again, she hasn't seen him in years. maybe he could've changed.
cass picks up her head. there's a box of donuts there. it's strangely familiar. rory slides into the seat across from her. how could he act so normal, after last night? not only. he could he after what happened? cass stares at him, debating whether to just leave or not. when she finally says something she says it in a flat, tired voice.
"what happened?" she says. she gets straight to the point - and she doesn't want to say she slept well anyways. at least, not on rory's bed. or wherever she slept the night before.
