"fidel!" emma tries to call her back, to get an explanation on what she just saw. she wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes. they've lost contact for a while, but she never envisioned that it would end like this. emma remembers when they first met, when they both had a fire lit in their very eyes and said that they were going to be the best trainers ever.
what ever happened to that?
she huffs. fidel's much faster than her, and she quickly flies out of emma's sight by ducking around the corner. her hands clench around alice's soft, cloudy wings. "what do we do?" she sighs. alice is strangely quiet, because she doesn't really have an answer either. she needs to get this straightened out. she needs know what happened to fidel, what caused her to act like this. it's all questions that can't be answered by herself.
it's strangely quiet when she lands on top of the rocky cliffs of sootopolis. the sun is just dipping over the horizon, casting an orange glow over the white limestone. her racing heartbeat is loud in her ears. "fidel!" her eyes search for the sunset colored ribbons that weave through fidel's black hair.
she can recognize it from anywhere, even though they haven't talked for nearly a year. how could she forget? emma's always liked fidel. she can even dare to say that there's even more to it, but now's not the right time to do anything. her eyesbrows crease in worry. she wants to talk to fidel, not as an enemy, but as a friend.
fidel's mind runs at a thousand miles an hour as she hears that altaria; alice, she learned from those innocent years ago; tailing behind her. it's an unsung command for dragonite to hurry up, to move, and dragonite does. but altaria catches up, she catches up. emma kasperson shouldn't have seen her do her business... exercise her power. she'd let others see it, others feel it. but emma was...
she was immaculate. fidel refused to let her know of the change, of the nonexistence of that perfect little girl with a magikarp. she would pursue strength. she would fucking decimate anything in her path. but... emma couldn't know. she didn't want emma to know.
well, now she did.
"i'm fine, emma." she says. fidel doesn't turn around at first, but when she does, it's obvious that it's anything but fine. there's a darkness in fidel's eyes, so deep in distrust and bitter rage and confusion and fear. the girl with a magikarp didn't exist anymore. this was a girl with a gyarados.
"i just need to get... stronger. by any means necessary. i won't allow myself to be weak, even if it means destroying everything!" she spat, but it was like a mantra; soulless, repeated, hollow. like it was something she said to try and justify all those countless sins she's just commited, but even she didn't know if she believed it anymore.
suddenly, her face flared in bitterness. "what's it to you? you going to stop me?!" and so she prepared a poke ball. she wasn't thinking, she knows. she shouldn't battle emma. she knows. but she never really thought about what she did or why she did it. not anymore. things just came to her... and she'd destroy them, as she always did.
fidel says she's fine, but it's obvious that she's not. emma wants so dearly to believe it, but there's something in fidel's eyes that makes her hesitate. there's darkness swirling in those deep depths. she's definitely been through some rough times, but she always believed that she's happy to be where she is. emma's always identified with the moon, a beacon in the sky that guides travelers at night. in contrast, she always thought that fidel was the sun, ambitious and ever so bright. now the sun is more dangerous. she believes that she burns everything that she touches.
and like a moth to a flame, emma recklessly reaches for her. there's too many emotions running through her right now -- confusion, sorrow, guilt. how long has fidel been this...power hungry? what changed from the girl she used to know as fidel, the little girl with the magikarp? she should've been there for fidel. emma could've done anything, but she didn't.
she could've prevented this.
fidel's eyes suddenly turn hard and cold, and emma flinches as she suddenly lashes out on her. her voice is mocking and bitter, a protective shell that shields something broken underneath. it's obvious that they're going to have to fight. she eyes fidel's pokeballs, wondering if it's still the same pokemon that she knew before.
"fidel..." she murmurs. emma's voice is shakey, but she refuses to back down. "...stop." she pleads, but it already looks like fidel's got her mind set. the pokeballs on emma's belt shake slightly, as if her pokemon are sensing the inevitable battle between them. but she's willing to give fidel one last chance before they're forced to fight.
emma seemed apprehensive. like she didn't want to raise a hand to fidel. damn it, that just made it more complicated... fidel knew she was in the right here, she just had to be. she was always right about these things, no matter what anyone said. emma just doesn't understand what it feels like... and yet... "...you're the last person i want to fight." fidel said, softening. she didn't want it to come to this. she didn't want it to be this way. she didn't want for emma to have stepped in front of her. she wanted to keep a friend, just one friend, or maybe someone who could be more than that... why couldn't she have just stepped aside and let her keep fighting? keep becoming stronger?
but it was not a perfect world. she'd learned that early. now emma wanted to stop her from becoming better, and she would fight that. she couldn't afford weakness... couldn't afford hurting the pokemon she cares about, no more, she'd had enough of that...
she needed to becoming stronger. that was that. her hands were living proof of that. and there was nothing getting in her way! power, power... the world revolved around power, and she needs more of it to protect herself. the world was cruel, and the world was evil, she couldn't afford to be weak...
her expression quickly hardened into a sneer, like the expression of a pokemon defending territory. "but this is what i gotta do, to be strong. i'll destroy everything, including you! scrafty! dragonite!" she flung the poke ball in her hand, revealing the fighting-dark pokemon. dragonite flew in front of her.
both of her pokemon seemed just as tainted as she was. corrupted by fear, seeing power as the only form of safety and happiness in this strange world that they lived in. both of them gave their respective cries; angry, unrepentant, but ultimately a result of fear for one's life.
"i don't want to fight you either." she whispers. she's glad that fidel's at least a little hesitant to battle her. it shows that she still cares. there's still a shred of humanity left in fidel, and emma decides that it's up to her to bring back the rest of it. there's still hope. she'll do it, even if it takes a battle. even if she has to march to the top of the mountain and back.
fidel's emotions are like a switch. she's obviously conflicted. seconds ago she was hesitant to fight, but now she's radically different. her face contorts into a sneer. she curls her lip and bares her teeth. emma's suddenly not a visitor anymore.
she's not here as a guest, but as an intruder.
well if fidel wanted a fight, she'll get one. emma hardens her resolve. "i don't want to do this, but i guess it's inevitable." emma sighs. she eyes the pokemon. they look...different. scared. wary. has fidel even named her pokemon? maybe there's more to this problem than she thought.
emma takes the first two pokeballs and throws them. "noire, oviya. don't do anything unless they attack first." she calls. a dusknoir and flygon respectively materialize, raring to go battle. they're ready to protect emma if anything happens, placing themselves directly in front of their trainer.
fidel frowned further. then, she'd be making the first move. raising her fingers to her lips, she gave a loud whistle, and dragonite flapped backwards. grabbing the base of it's sturdy wings, the orange dragon ascended further into the air, bringing it's trainer with it.
"you know your targets. scrafty! fake out, then foul play! dragonite! dragon claw!"
the scrafty complied. in a flash, the orange pokemon was suddenly in front of the ghost. it reeled it's fist back, and a shape begun to form around it. it was... noire's own fist? the image of a dusknoir's knuckle begun to fly towards noire's face in a nasty right hook.
meanwhile, dragonite begun to swoop down from the air towards the flygon, fidel still mounted on it. it extended it's arm, and a mystical energy begun to create the shape of a claw. when close enough, it would attempt to bring down the claw on oviya in an overhead swipe.
with a whistle fidel mounts the dragonite and takes off. emma takes the time to return alice, leaping onto oviya's back and following fidel. she's much faster than alice, and emma has to wrap her arms around the pokemon's neck just so she doesn't fall off.
there's a sudden jolt as oviya jerks to the side. she barely dodges out of the way of the dragon claw and quickly makes a detour. oviya circles around, choosing to stay at a distance. blue fire spews out of her mouth, launched straight at the pokemon. it's so hot that even emma could feel the heat. she just hopes that fidel doesn't.
with a quick glance downwards emma could see that noire's already in trouble. her typing makes her doubly weak against scraggy. emma can tell that she won't last long if she's left alone. "oviya, let me return noire real quick." emma says. they dive towards the battle below.
she digs out noire's pokeball from her belt and returns the pokemon in a flash of red light. with a press of a button emma lets out carlita. the breloom looks around in confusion before she realizes that it's an actual battle. she readies herself before launching at the pokemon and throwing another punch at the fighting type.
fidel turned her attention to scraggy. the right hook missed barely as the ghost-type was recalled in favor of a breloom, who quickly threw what she surmised to be a mach punch. she frowned; now she definitely had some form of disadvantage. however, she'd play it out.
"scraggy, quick guard! then ice pu--" the sunset-hued trainer was cut off above, but scraggy understood it's orders. the nature of quick guard allowed the hoodlum pokemon to erect a small yet effective barrier against the ultra-fast move. after blocking that, an ice-infused left jab started soaring at breloom.
meanwhile, in the air, fidel was made busy by a stream of fire headed her way. she hid behind dragonite the best she could; at this rate, it was useless to try and fly out of the way. feeling the burning heat around her, she gave out a panicked command. "d-dragonite! hyper beam!"
the dragonite, who was taking the brunt of the dragon breath, barely heard fidel's command over the raging fire. all that was understood was that it was a hyper beam needed. opening it's eyes and finding the source of it's pain, it aimed at the flygon's flight pattern.
fidel's pokemon then fired. the energy blast rocketed through the sky, towards the flygon. the power from the attack was enough to send dragonite flying backwards a bit. on it's back, fidel sighed in relief at not being in danger any more.
