The way to Petalburg is riddles with tall grass and hedges, designed to spook little children into believing that the grass holds more trouble than just a wild dog. For Elijah, moving through the route is easy enough, the wild pokemon aren't much of the problem, but it's the trainers he's looking out for. There's more commotion than usual, news has it that Petalburg was expecting a great many things, a flock of trainers were no doubt moving towards the city as the days went, Elijah was no exception. Of course, he's convinced himself that he's not following the crowd, that Petalburg just so happened to be go along with his route so he has no choice but to accept it as such.
Beside him Praline stays afloat, happy to be out and about on such a sunny day. Eli's house in Oldale doesn't provide much room to stretch his wings, and whenever he does try to do so he ends up bumping into objects that more often than not causes his trainer panic. He's learned to keep still, if only for his trainer. But out here, the wind is tasty and fresh, and he can't help the glee of being free.
Elijah halts, just by the edge of Petalburg, looking back towards the route. That was easy. Almost too easy. "Let's wait a while, Praline." He says to the Pokemon, smiling at the fairy type. He feels a little uneasy, just walking into a new zone without much trouble. "We'll challenge the next person who comes through, have you stretch out more, wouldn't you like that?" He preens to his Togekiss, who shouts out an affirmative, happy to have such a thoughtful trainer.

Alright, enough hanging about Oldale. If his travelling companion wanted to pull disappearing acts throughout the day without so much as the smallest explanation... fine. Kristmar would allow him that. But there was still nothing stopping him from making a day trip to the outskirts of Petalburg because, like, the next town was right there. Sue him for wanting to get a glance of his next - and first - gym and sizing up the challengers that visited it, right? [break][break] But won't Niklaus be annoyed that you're going without him? Kristmar heard his ralts innocently question, speaking directly into his mind via a telepathic connection which was... still as weird as it had been the first day she'd attempted it. The blonde adjusted the grip with which he carried the small psychic pokémon and glanced away, avoiding her questioning gaze. I thought travelling partners were supposed to travel to-- [break][break] "Yes, yes, I know," he interrupted, letting his ruby eyes roll towards the periwinkle and unblemished sky. "Travel together. But what Nik doesn't know, won't hurt him. Besides, it's only for an hour." [break][break] Kristmar gave a churlish snort, jerking his head to the side to flick away the bangs creeping over his face in a haughty gesture. [break][break] "He isn't my mum, Adelaide." Like hell he was. They were only barely just friends. Kris felt the psychic type retreat from his mind, severing the connection after that answer, and fall silent. He didn't mean to sound so abrupt with her but she had to excuse him for being a little bothered on the subject. He'd heard that there was a festival or event or something of some sort planned in Petalburg in the upcoming days; he certainly didn't want to miss it if Niklaus was off doing... whatever the hell he was doing. All he wanted was a possible sneak peek of what was being prepared. [break][break] Up ahead, he spotted a blonde male who - on drawing closer to, as he was by the path - he realized he recognized from a period in his life whose existence he'd rather not acknowledge. It was safe to say Kristmar was more interested in the pokémon that floated to the blonde's side. He gave the male a vague look, letting his gaze pass over him but otherwise ignoring his presence, and then glanced at the... what was it? A togekiss, right? Kristmar held his ralts a little more snugly against his chest as he felt himself undeniably gripped with slight awe as he beheld the dual fairy-flying type. These were, like... rare, okay? He hadn't so much as seen a togepi before, never mind its final evolution. [break][break] "Oh, hey." He murmured with no notable enthusiasm, blanking the pokémon's trainer in favour for its partner. "That's a togekiss, right?"

He never quite took to being ignored too well, eyes narrowing while a hint of a frown plays on his lips. That's what he gets for letting Praline out, he supposes, as the large pokemon garners more attention than say a Rattata. "Looks like one does it." Comes the answer, almost mocking if it weren't for the smile. See, he can be perfectly two-faced when he wants, and he's not entirely sure whether to approach Kristmar with aggression or not. There's something about him that makes him want to pause and think, to try and remember why this trainer looks so familiar.
But the idea of battle is first and foremost on his mind today, and he can only be so patient for his own thoughts. "Ain't that right, Praline. You're a Togekiss, aren't you?" He asks Praline, who answers with a shrill Tooo-ge, floating lower to Kris's eye level to peer at him with a smile. The Togekiss might as well balance out Elijah's scathing attitude with his positive one. "Well there you go, straight from the Togekiss's mouth. And that's a Ralts." He says obnoxiously, pointing at the pokemon in Kristmar's grasp.
"Would you like to try to battle?"

Gott, how did someone with such a surly air about them end up with a pokémon that was practically the living embodiment of joy? Much like flared bell-bottom jeans and the twenty-first century, they visibly clashed so much. Togekiss, as a pokémon, was cute, blithe, sweet; whereas the blonde... was not. Kris forced his eyes away from the birdlike creature as he's smiled at and to its trainer instead, the bridge of his nose crinkling in distaste. [break][break] The mild excitement he'd felt on seeing an actual togekiss in person was rapidly fizzling away to naught. [break][break] "Your observation skills are about as good as mine, I see," he drawled back, clearly unimpressed. Kris shifted his weight on his feet and offered the other male another look, arching an unamused eyebrow at him. Adelaide, not appreciating this oddly tense exchange, sagged a little heavier in her coordinator's arms, not at all comfortable with this, and touched one of his wrists with her small hand. [break][break] He wasn't too surprised at being offered a battle though; this stretch of route from Oldale to Petalburg was a common battle field from what he'd heard. And, although he wasn't humoured at all by this familiar face's first impression, he did consider the proposition while letting his inquisitive gaze wander back to the Togekiss. He might not stand much of a chance but... seeing such a pokémon in action would be worth it because, again, it was a rare specimen. Who knows when he'd have another chance to. [break][break] "Sure. Why the hell not?" Kris said with a shrug, bending over so to place his ralts on the ground. He gave her an encouraging little bat on the small of her back and coaxed her forward, adopting a quieter and much softer voice towards her. "C'mon, Addy, go play for a little bit."

Huh, would you look at that politeness actually gets him somewhere.
He smirks to himself, mentally patting himself on the back for not being downright rude. More like passive-aggressive rude which was infinitely better since people can't actually prove he's been rude without sounding like precarious pricks. It all makes sense in his mind, really.
He chuckles at the dry humor, though he can see the man's fascination with Praline overbearing his irritance. So Kris would let his Ralts take on Elijah's Togekiss? Well, even that got a frown from Elijah. The man was not above causing pain, in fact revelled in it, but hurting a cutie like that was kind of sad. Still a battle was a battle and if that was Kris's choice then Elijah wasn't sticking around if the other trainer started to cry once the Ralts was unmoving.
"Play, huh?" That was one way to put it. He takes a few steps back, establishing the battle field as the space between him and Kris. "Alright Praline, go with an opening Air Slash."
The Togekiss does one large glide around the field, positioning himself just in front of Elijah, almost in a protective gesture, before he pulls up the slightest, sending a burst of wind at the Ralts.

Kristmar had already suspected that there'd be a wild difference in the two pokémon's power. A juvenile first-stage ralts against a fully evolved togekiss? It'd be foolish to honestly believe he stood much of a chance but, then again, what kind of battle was his opponent hoping to expect? This route was crawling with new trainers with fresh parties; if a challenge was what he'd expected, this really wasn't the place. [break][break] Kris squeezed his eyes shut as a short blast of wind came hurtling down towards their side of the battle field, aimed at his poorly trained ralts. The blonde's hair and clothes were buffeted in the fleeting gale but that was nothing compared to the direct hit that Adelaide had received. On opening his eyes, he saw the small psychic type sprawled on the grass and, apparently, struggling to recover. Kristmar blinked, his cherry red eyes widening, taken aback himself at the sheer display of power and it'd only been its first hit. [break][break] He'd at least hoped to put up a little bit of resistance. [break][break] "Addy, use confusion!" He told her once she'd tentatively gotten to her feet. Despite the powerful air-based attack.. she was still willing to continue. She still had energy. Although... Kristmar immediately noticed the way she recoiled, as if bracing herself for another piercing blast of wind. "Addy!" He called, trying to snap her out of it. "Addy!" [break][break] It took her a moment, but Adelaide did respond, albeit looking a little, ah... shaken. Maybe... he should've gone with someone who possessed a little more fighting spirit. Like his krabby Astor seeing as Deimos, against a flying and fairy type would've stood even less of a chance. But, Gott, the togekiss was fearsome yet beautiful. This fucking guy was so lucky, a niggle of envy twisted in Kristmar's gut. [break][break] "Confusion, Addy, you can do it." And this time she listened, giving a hasty nod and quavering 'O-Okay' that made the blonde's heart sink a little further. The ralts concentrated her psychic powers, manifesting them, and aiming them towards her intimidating foe.

Elijah smirks. Truthfully he hadn't thought that the Ralts would be able to handle the attack, the flinch was a bonus at most, so it was a surprise to see the other fairy type still standing, albeit with difficulty, against the powerful air attack.
"Stronger than it looks."
Praline cringes as the psychic attack ails him, attacking his senses with some invisible force. It's not enough though, and Praline recovers from the attack, though with a slight twitch in his eye, clearly not very amused with being attacked but takes it as coolly as possible.
"Another air slash ought to do it, Praline." Elijah encourages. He's lucky, he knows that, ought of all the pokemon he had gotten he was given a Togepi, it was thrust into his arms rather unceremoniously and he'd been left to its care. Looks like all that time coddling the Togepi was paying off.

Kristmar felt his jaw tense a little as the other trainer ordered his pokémon to go in with another air slash. Adelaide had struggled to recover over the first so there was no doubt that just one more attack from this ominously strong creature would end this battle. Like, fuck, he knew his chances were slim but... he didn't want to put up so little of a fight! He - they - were better than this. They could withstand two attacks, at least. [break][break] "Double team, Addy! Now!" He urged his ralts, forcing her to react before the next blast of slicing wind barreled into her. Kris knew, he knew well, that dodging the togekiss' attacks was just postponing the inevitable but, partially for Adelaide's sake and her confidence in battling, he couldn't allow her to be overpowered so easily and suffer a humilliating defeat. Perhaps... he should've used someone else. Like his krabby. That shitty thing. [break][break] Addy skittered about the field, darting out of the way of the air slash, as she took evasive action. Kris let himself breathe a small sigh of relief, even if it were only going to be temporary. [break][break] "Alright, another confusion," he told her, cupping his hand near his eyes as the residual wind created by the togekiss' attack whipped past him, "before he uses that again!" Kristmar hurriedly raked his fingers through his hair after the blast, grumbling something about being in the wrong place, and messily combed his now tousled locks into a loose bun as his ralts went after the large bird-like pokémon with another psychic attack.

He's taking it easy on the Ralts, Kristmar must notice by now. Elijah didn't exactly want to hurt the little thing, not so much out of the goodness of his heart but for pity sake. It was a long shot, and the ralts was probably several movesets away from trying to beat Togekiss in an out right fight, not without getting hella creative. As it was, taking only raw power into account, Praline would be able to win.
He misses of course, typical of the Togekiss to do, confused with the blinking mimics that the Ralts had left out and had mistakenly targeted an illusion instead. Again, he takes the confusion, flinching just the slightest from the pain. It was too difficult to dodge something that couldn't be seen, and Praline didn't quite have the senses to do so. He utters a pained squeak, a miniscule drop in flight.
Elijah is only the slightest bit worried. The confusions would take their toll, and if Adelaide was lucky, it would confused Praline enough. Which meant he really shouldn't be letting the Ralts take potshots at its fellow fairy.
"Air slash, extreme speed, don't give it another chance Praline. I mean it." He says sternly.

[TOGEKISS used AIR SLASH] [TOGEKISS used EXTREME SPEED]

If they'd had any luck, the togekiss would've found itself sufficiently addled by Adelaide's attack to become actually confused and possibly unable to attack. The chances of that had been slim at best but it seemed like lady luck just wasn't favouring them today. But it was alright. Kristmar had assumed this would have ended in a loss anyway so, for once, the bitter taste of defeat wasn't strong enough to sicken him and poison his mood. Given their undeniable difference in both power and moves, Kris would take that the fact that they'd put up a little fight as consolation. [break][break] The air slash, this time, was unable to be dodged despite Adelaide's increased evasion but she tried it regardless. The attack still caught her though and the powerful brunt of the wind sent her literally flying to her trainer's feet where he too also squinted and braced in the wind. Unlike the first attack she received, Adelaide no longer had the energy to get back up onto her feet and continue. Instead, she gazed up at her trainer with a weak but apologetic look before her eyes closed and Kristmar felt her recede from his mind as she fainted. [break][break] "Alright, alright; that's enough now." The blonde called out, waving his hand as a signal for the togekiss to discontinue its offensive. They didn't need to go overkill on them just to prove their brute superiority in this battle by attacking a felled pokémon with an equally strong move. Sighing and closing his eyes, Kris fished out the ralts' pokéball with slight reluctance - what he wouldn't have given to have met this togekiss on equal terms - and called the psychic type back. [break][break] "Your togekiss is pretty impressive," he admitted with a meek smile, swallowing this defeat. This one-sided slaughter. "I'd like to battle it again one day. When, y'know, I actually stand a chance."
