It'd been a while since Kristmar had taken a day to do, y'know, tourist-y things. He'd visited a decent number of towns across Hoenn while he'd been enlisted in Magma but he'd never exactly had the chance to actually get any sightseeing done. The festival that was being held was a great opportunity to enjoy the spoils that Petalburg, as a town, offered before continuing their journey. When Kris had seen a stand offering guided tours through the caves near the coast, he'd signed himself up in a heartbeat because what was cooler than that? Actual, y'know, caves. [break][break] Dressed in a light wardrobe of stonewashed grey denim capris and a loose-fitting pastel shirt, Kris was having a tough time travelling over the sand without getting half of the beach in his shoes. His own fault for not packing sandals, he supposed, but then again wearing something as flimsy as a pair of sandals in a cave sounded very perilous, an accident waiting to happen. Rather sandy toes than broken toes, that was the blonde's reasoning. [break][break] Once he caught up to their group's ranger - a young lady called Deanna - he saw that he'd been the first to arrive. A little surprising, to tell the truth; he'd even beat Nikkie here. [break][break] "Hey," he breathed, taking a moment to knock most of the sand from his shoes as he observed with slight awe the ravenous mouth of the cave. "S'definitely a little bit bigger up close. Heh."

ALL I WANNA SEE IS A SKY FULL OF LIGHTERS
❝
DAZED AND OUT OF BREATH, Mikayla ran like the very definition of a spoiled little rich girl down the steps tha would lead to the cave she was going to explore. The whole notion was a new thing for her, but that was a part of the reason she enjoyed the concept of going to Hoenn so much. It would be a fresh start. But of course so habits died hard, and Mikayla was dressed in a long skirt and a tank top even as she entered the cave, her hand on her oversized sun hat and the other one trying to fix the strap of her high heeled party shoes.
She was late and that wasn't like her, so it was natural for her to be all red in the face and attempting to sputter out excuses.
"I'm so sorry!" she shouted, her voice shrill and annoying. "I’m just, I just.." She was getting redder than a tomato at her own embarrassment, and he already felt like crying from the scene she was making.
Finally she heard reshape make its familiar click and she straighter herself out, attempting to drain the color from her face. She wished she could sink into a wall and disappear.
It was a relief to be in Petalburg and away from Oldale, his mind and body able to relax much more now that he no longer had to worry about someone from his old home spotting him. His pokemon where much more happy as well seeing as they were no longer cooped up in their pokeballs although his newer ones were trying to get used to it. Niklaus had taken to walking along the beach in the area and relaxing in the city before thinking of challenging the gym. However, when he’d heard about some interesting activities to do he’d spoken to Kris who’d apparently also caught wind of it and they’d decided to have a bit of fun and join in. Which was why Nik was now on his way to meet up with the group they’d been assigned although as he glanced at his watch he noted he was a bit late. He’d over slept in the nearby trees cuddled with his pokemon and had only woken up moments ago. Leaves and small twigs littered his hair and with one hand holding his sneakers as he walked through the sand, the other worked at taking out the evidence of his rest.
Squirtle, squirt! Ruby colored eyes glanced down at the squirtle at his side who continued to run up to the shallow waters and pounce around. Batting at it and then rolling around in the sand. It was obvious Kalos was having the time of his life being near the water and out of his pokeball. The tiny turtle pokemon having all but forgiven the pinkette for keeping him cooped up for so long now that he had a chance to play in the water so much. A soft brush on his neck made him reach under his long pink locks to stroke Ventus’ fur, the Noibat’s wide eyes squinted against the flash of sun and huddling deeper into his hair. He chuckled lightly but fondly at his pokemon, glad they seemed to be in a better mood now than when they’d been in Oldale. He suspected his own mood had begun to rub off on them and they’d started to get more skittish and grouchy while there.
When he reached the cave he could hear voices from inside and gave the entrance a curious look before looking back at his Squirtle who was still playing with the water. Shaking his head lightly he called softly, “Come on, Kalos. We’re going in." The water pokemon lifted his head and let out a chirp before hurrying up to him and following as he entered. Only a little ways in and he spotted a familiar head of blonde hair but the other two people he didn’t recognize but the uniform of a ranger was something he couldn’t forget. So there was our guide and he guessed the other girl was one of their teammates so he walked up next to Kris as he looked at the girl curiously. “What’s going on?” He asked his traveling companion before shifting his sneakers to his other hand, the stone floor a little cool compared to how the sand had felt between his toes.
Ventus peeked out a little from under his hair and let out soft clicks, his ears twitching slightly as they caught the echoes. Large golden eyes landed on Kristmar and the bat pokemon let out a soft screech before wriggling under Nikkie’s hair. Both Kalos and Nikkie giving the hatchling a mild look before looking back at Kris to wait for his answer.
"you alright?" deanna asks. the girlw as already getting flustered. she eyes her high heels and sunhat. that isn't very cave-like attire, and she hopes that nothing bad happens, but it probably won't. she shrugs. she'll just do her job. "alrighty, follow me!"
the cave is cool and dank. they stop at the split path. both look equally daring, dim lights lining the sides of the cave. but the right is labelled 'B' while the left is labelled 'S'. deanna has no idea what that means. she turns towards the people for a group vote.

Thankfully, Kristmar wasn't left alone for very long. Like, thank fuck. As romantic - haha - as awkwardly exploring some caves with a female ranger could be, it wasn't exactly in the blonde's plans for today. Shortly after he arrived, a flustered girl with the most questionable selection of footwear showed up and then, to his slight relief, Niklaus did with two of his pokémon in tow. The small batlike one, forever hidden in his trainer's rose locks, didn't seem quite pleased to see him though, greeting him with a screech. It just made Kris chuckle gently and lean forward teasingly. [break][break] "Glad to see you as well, Ven," he chimed, pulling his head away before he could get too close and directed his focus to the noisy noibat's owner instead. "But not much. You were pushing it for time, weren't you? And..." Squinting slightly, he reached up and plucked a stringy little twig tangled in Niklaus' mop of gently unkempt locks. He let it drop and shook his head at his travelling companion before walking after the ranger, who'd commenced their small tour through the cave system. [break][break] But not first without another casual glance at the girl who was also in their guided tour. Or, more noticeably, at her shoes. [break][break] "Make sure y'don't twist something in those," he said, pursing his lips a little. He said it out of actual concern for the girl's wellbeing and... of course, for the wellbeing of their tour. Like, hell, he didn't want to need to turn around because she'd gone down on a slippery patch because of her heels and sprained her ankle. And he wasn't about to give her his shoes either. Hmph. [break][break] Kristmar followed the ranger into the beginnings of the cave, marvelling quietly at how large the cavern was and how eerie the echoing of their footsteps sounded as they ventured deeper. He glanced back at Niklaus a couple of times, wondering how his bat pokémon and his sensitive hearing would fare in this place. Once the cave split into two and they were made to pick the route they wanted, Kris shifted his weight from foot to foot. [break][break] "Uh... which way's best?" Wouldn't the ranger take them on the best way anyway? The whole point of a guided tour was to see the cool bits, right? "S... maybe?" S for snake. As simple as that.

ALL I WANNA SEE IS A SKY FULL OF LIGHTERS

AS MUCH AS SHE ENJOYED having her pride to herself she managed to ruin it in the worst ways possible. Mikayla wasn't actually gifted with much hindsight, and she supposed that even of she explored a cave with heels on some kind knight would save her from the trouble by carrying extra footwear. Instead the reward she received for all her clustering and hasty moving was a polite inquiry from the ranger -to which he nodded a little too hastily to- and an annoyingly rude jab from a blonde which was met with a glare and a huff.
She was an expert at walking in heels, okay?
"You don't have to be so rude about it!" she shouted, her voice a little shaky from the embarrassment. She could use a little help or maybe some nice, kind words, and instead she was met with a grump with an expression as though he was eating something sour for all of eternity.
That thought brightened her mood a bit as she turned to the next explorer, and the first thing she noticed about him was his hair- oh my gosh his hair!
Mikayla’a mouth went agape and she stared for a while before forcing it closed (staring or gaping was not polite, oh darn was she being weird again?!) and trying to say something.
"Oh my gosh, how do you get that much volume in your hair, it's like so fabulous.". One word collided into the next and the sentence was just a mix and mash of teenage slang, but she hoped her message carried through.
"Oh, pardon me!" She corrected, forcing on a happy smile. "I'm Mikayla, it's wonderful to meet you."
She then turned to the blonde. "And you too, I suppose."
That was when she realized that the guide had asked her a question and she blinked. "Oh of course, S is fine." Despite the fact that she hadn't taken too much of a liking towards the male, she could not refute his taste in letters. Who would choose something as inelegant as B?
"left it is!" deanna chirps, and leads them further down the cave. the rest of the group follows behind her. it isn't long before the cave suddenly rumbles. the ground shifts beneath her and there's a loud roar that echoes through the cave.
a krokorok appears. it looks angry. probably how the group's invaded its territory. deanna braces herself, bringing out her stylus and turning back towards the group.
"h-hey you guys look like coordinators right? can you calm down this pokemon somehow?"

SHE CAME TO REGRET her decision of choosing elegance over whatever the hell else almost immediately as the group came face to face with a huge monster. Mikayla let out a startled scream before doubling backwards and slamming into the blonde haired grump from earlier. She turned around, blue eyes lot with fear as she mumbled an apology an managed a semi-graceful bow. She remembered her courtesies well an despite all you could fault her for, when she tried, Mikayla was definitely a very polite person.
"Ah, yes!" she said, confidence suddenly renewed. If her legitimacy as a coordinator was at stake, she would to just about anything to prove herself right and victorious. She threw a pokeball out and her Oshawott appeared immediately, it's face confused. Mikayla knelt down beside him and whispered in some words.
"Hey Lancel, remember that bit about performing for people? Yeah, well we have our first audience, okay? Give me an ice beam, and make it into a sphere!"
The oshawott nodded hastily and threw both hands into the sky. A sphere of ice formed and Mikayla smiled at the abilities showcased by her Pokemon.
"Alright, slice and dice, make that coal into a diamond~" The oshawott chirped happily and jumped up, probably creating some unwanted attention from the ’audience’ but never the less the water type took its shell and began slicing at the orb of ice.
When it was done, a beautiful crystal found itself at Mikayla’s feet, which the girl then rolled towards the wild Pokemon. It was glimmering even in the faintest of lights- maybe that much of a distraction would be enough?

Seriously, if Kristmar could roll his eyes any harder at this girl, he'd lose his eyes in the back of his head. [break][break] "Kristmar." He muttered in reply, although it was both for her and the guide. "Charmed." [break][break] His comment before hadn't been meant with pure malice, just a sliver of it, because it had honestly been also for her own wellbeing. But, y'know. Forget that now. She could slip up and twist her ankle now for all he cared and Nikkie, whose hair she openly fawned over, could help her hobble back to the cave entrance. He gave a little snort, slightly pompous, and stalked straight past her as the guide took them down the left tunnel marked 'S'. He was tempted to drawl 'keep up' to her as he passed but... for now he'd curb his tongue. [break][break] Aaaand maybe the left tunnel wasn't the best choice though. [break][break] Kris wasn't sure what bothered him more; coming face to face with an irate krokorok or how the girl's heel - her stupid fucking shoes, seriously - came very, very near to treading on his toe. He hissed a low curse and stole a step or two backwards, waving off the girl's apology with slight impatience because... yeah, hello, there was no time for that right now. [break][break] Reptiles were quite territorial creatures. Very hard to pacify once they were riled. Experience - or at least his reptile enthusiast of a father's words - taught him that when they were pissed... it was best to leave them alone, especially if they were no longer small enough to handle. Krokorok might only come up to his stomach in height but it was easy to tell that... it was considerably strong. Not a pokémon Kristmar would be able to take on with his young team. Calm him? Distract him? The latter seemed more probable and, already, two strategies came to mind. [break][break] Although... it appeared that the high-heeled girl - Mikayla - wanted to have a go at this first. And Kristmar squinted in disdain at her choice of a 'show'. The blonde shuffled closer to his travel companion and lowered his voice for their ears only (and the ranger's, he supposed, if she was within earshot). [break][break] "She knows... that krokorok aren't exactly fans of... ice, right?" He murmured to Nikkie, watching as the girl's oshawott sliced up a block of ice. A bit of an impressive show. His gible, who was also a ground type, would recoil at the touch of ice, it being far too cold for his liking and Kristmar could only imagine that a pokémon - a desert crocodile type - would share the same dislike. "This'll be fun to watch~" But, just in case, he prepared both his krabby and his ralts, holding the pokéballs tightly in his hand.

MAKE ME FEEL
LIKE A GOD
Niklaus watched his younger companion and hatchling interact, the blonde teasing the bat pokemon into screeching softly again in agitation before ducking underneath his hair once more. Little agitated clicks being released as Ventus groused about the blonde as quietly as it could and Nik scratched behind one of his large ears to pacify the poor thing. “Then you wonder why he’s not all that happy to see you. You big bully.” Kalos chirped up a few laughs as well also amused by his youngest group brother being teased by their human traveling companion’s teasing. However, before he could offer a quip up to his blonde counterpart after he ‘helpfully’ took out a twig there was suddenly a girl fawning over his hair…a rather annoying girl and heels. How stupid could you be?
He gave her a rather unimpressed look waiting for her to be finished before he drawled out thickly, “Fascinating and it’s naturally like this.” He turned to their guide and dipped his head politely, ignoring the girl’s introduction totally as he introduced himself to their guide. “I’m Niklaus…Nikki or Nik for short.” He shrugged his shoulders with a little smile. No one really called him his full name unless they were Magma or Aqua, neither of which were here at this moment. That was certainly a relief if he did say so himself.
The pinkette’s attention was caught when they were given a choice and Kalos looked up at him expectantly so he shrugged. Lifting a portion of his hair and locking sanguine eyes with gold he murmured, “What do you think, Ven??” The bat-like pokemon poked his head out a little more and let out a series of clicks, ears twitching as they caught everything echoing back to them. A little clawed wing pulled tugged to the right slightly before Ven ducked away. The other two had picked their route by that time but Nikki hesitated, “I’d prefer ‘B’ but I suppose I’ve been outvoted.” He chuckled lightly, only vaguely aware of the wary glances Kalos was giving the cave marked ‘S’. Of course it didn’t take long to realize why both of his pokemon hadn’t been very keen on the idea of going down this particular path.
At the girl’s startled scream when the Krokorok appeared Ventus let out a distressed sound. His sensitive ears catching the echoes of her scream as well as the pokemon’s roar and making him huddle deeper into Nik’s hair, even his squirtle winced at the sound of it. Niklaus shot her an annoyed look, growling lowly. “You’re screaming and yelling only makes things worse. Do you want even more pokemon like this one around?”
His attention was stolen away however when their guide asked for some help. Lifting an eyebrow in surprise he opened his mouth to reply but the girl, Mikayla or whatever, was acting and from the first command she gave Nik wanted to bury himself somewhere. What an idiot. Apparently Kris was thinking along the same lines as Kristmar came closer and murmured the same line of thoughts he was having. Ice was not something that would probably be looked kindly upon…great. His lip curled in distaste as he drawled out, “Obviously not or else I doubt she would have used it…Then again she’s wearing heels in a cave…who knows.” He could feel Ventus quivering slightly beneath his hair and even Kalos who was usually rather brave, moved closer to Nikki as though seeking comfort. He couldn’t blame his rather young pokemon considering by the looks of it this pokemon was far more powerful than any of their pokemon.
All else was forgotten in the face of this creature as he stood his ground, ignoring the coolness of the stones beneath his feet and how Kristmar himself seemed to prepare for the worst.
the krokorok eyes the ice ball. it's interesting, at least. it lands at his feet, and he observes it carefully before chomping down on it.
the ball shatters in his jaws. shards of ice pierce his mouth and the cold is freezing on his teeth. krokorok roars in pain, stomping his feet into the mud and sending it rights towards the group!
deanna turns back to them. she would have to call backup if they didn't do anything soon. "you guys have any other ideas?"

Any sly satisfaction Kristmar felt on seeing the girl's strategy fail spectacularly was very brief. He'd been banking on her little display to not please the krokorok but he hadn't counted on it enraging him further. The fucking idiot. Why the hell had it tried to eat the dumb ice crystal Mikayla's pokémon had made? And, ugh, to make matters even worse it was flinging mud at them now! [break][break] He supposed it'd be his turn to give distracting the krokorok a go now. Again, Kristmar glanced down at the two pokéballs he clutched in his hands and went over the two possible strategies he could use; one was much more passive and was just a mud-based move whereas the other was... much more flashy and probably risky too with how infuriated the ground pokémon was right now. It was worth a shot though. Kristmar trusted that... Niklaus would have his back if he fucked it up just as well as Miklayla had done, right? [break][break] "Alright, Adelaide," he murmured as he released his small ralts, "we're gonna give this a try." As soon as she was set down on the cool cave floor, she whipped around to stare at the angered pokémon stomping about in the mud. [break][break] What... are we giving a try, Kristmar? She whispered into his mind, sounding very unsure about being so near a pokémon that easily outlevelled her. I-I can't battle that krokorok! It's far too strong! He'll-- [break][break] "I know, I know," Kris said to her, crouching down, trying to quash the slight panic that fed through their telepathic connection. He ran his hand over her head and sat back on his heels. "We're not fighting it. We just need... to distract it. Get it away. Calm it. Anything, really, so we can continue and... I have an idea." [break][break] Calming a furious krokorok or reptile of any type was no easy feat, so Kris was aiming to distract it or even intimidate it enough into submission so it'd back off and leave their party alone. His ralts was only one pokémon, basically a child still, yet with a nice range of moves that could hopefully ease this tense situation a little. He planned to use a combination he'd been reserving for an upcoming contest but, here, right now, seemed as good a time as any to put it to the real test. Once he quietly yet hurriedly explained to Adelaide what she was expected to do, he straightened himself back up and brushed the flecks of mud from his shirt. [break][break] "Ready? Double team and dazzling gleam!" Kristmar instructed, gesturing towards the krokorok. "Keep out of its reach and, remember, small pulses. We don't want to initiate a battle if we can help it." [break][break] Adelaide started off with a harmless double team which she used to get within distance of the dual type. Her tiny bodice flittered in and out of view, lingering in various locations for split seconds at a time and giving the illusion that there were multiple ralts darting about the area near the krokorok. Addy let herself get comfortable and limber up before she proceeded. Kristmar had exuded only confidence when he'd been talking with her but there was still notable concern straining his features, worry etched clearly into his expression, something that - even in this pitiful light - could be visible. [break][break] After a few moments, Adelaide proceeded to the second phase and combined her two moves. Her body glowed with a pale luminescence in preparation and steadily radiated more fairy energy. The light grew in intensity until, finally, she began to release the stored energy in gentle pulses, a softer and substantially more weaker version of her usual dazzling gleam. Kris hoped that this would be enough to deter the dark-type, or at least distract him enough so that he'd drop his vexation.
There had been just a second of hope that this silly girl had actually managed to do something correct and perhaps even helpful…However, as soon as the hope sparked it went out as the pokemon let out a roar of rage and pain as he ice hurt its mouth. He couldn’t help but feel a little bad for the pokemon and he gritted his teeth as mud was sent flying their way. Unthinkingly he glanced at Kalos and threw out an order, missing Kristmar’s action of bringing out Adelaide as he spoke firmly. “Use watergun and aim for the mud, make sure it doesn’t get to us but don’t make it seem like we’re challenging him.” The squirtle gave him and uncertain look, clearly shaken by the presence of this pokemon before he glanced at Ventus who still hid quivering in Niklaus’ hair. After a moment the tiny turtle pokemon gave him a determined look and nodded his head, moving in front of them slightly and inhaling deeply. He held it for a moment before letting short bursts of water out, aiming only for the mud to counter it.
Niklaus let out a soft relieved breath before his attention was caught by Kristmar’s words to his Ralts. He gave his traveling companion a concerned look as he murmured, “I hope you know what you’re doing…” Adelaide was just a baby much like Ventus and it made him nervous to see her about to stand before that monster of a pokemon even if she wasn’t attacking him. However, as he watched the ‘show’ she put on he couldn’t help but be entranced by it. Even Kalos and Ventus couldn’t help but watch the petite female pokemon as she performed. The pinkette would readily admit he was impressed by the blonde’s quick thinking.
“Alright…maybe you do know what you’re doing.” The older male huffed out lightly, amused tones dancing along his words. However, it didn’t quite reach his eyes that still kept a careful watch on the upset pokemon that was the cause of their current pause. Vaguely he wondered if they would have to end up heading back out or risk the danger of getting seriously hurt by this enraged pokemon if they didn’t figure out what to do quickly.
she watches as the other coordinators start distracting the krokorok. it's clearly disoriented by the multiple ralts, and the dazzling gleams that it sends out. the falshes distract it's eyes, but it's still a little agitated.
deanna nudges the girl. "hey, maybe if you use another ice beam you can distract it for good."
