"fluffy, have i ever told you that you're the fluffiest lil' thing i've ever seen?"
the eevee gave him a quizzical stare - like it hadn't been obvious enough with the namesake he had been bestowed with. finnian let out a laughg as he shoved his hands into his pockets. he quickened his pace to keep up with the eevee, standing over him before scooping him into his arms rather roughly. he earned a solid kick to the chest in retaliation.
"oof! fluffy, you're really strong!" finnian complimented in awe, feeling a little winded after having his breath knocked right out of him. he maintained his grip on the brown furred creature, nonetheless. "route 101!" he exclaimed, fumbling with his phone to take a picture. "man, this is a real important moment. our first route together!"
he tilted his phone downwards and smooshed his face close to the eevee, who looked less than pleased to be roped into this boy's antics. "say cheese!" he quickly checked the picture. "man, fluffy, we gotta work on that smile of yours!" the newest addition into his phone's photo album was a very happy child with a not-so-happy eevee in his hands, the sign leading to route 101 in the background. "let's go!"

Briley had been on Route 101 for... a while. Now she was pretty good with directions, she knew exactly where she was compared to the opening, but she had spent all this time since early in the morning to train and catch new pokémon. It was going pretty well, she guessed...
She looked down to her pokémon for the millionth time that day. The Trapinch tilted it's head at it's trainer curiously. Briley didn't really know how to feel about her yet, but she supposed she did only get her last evening. She was an affection little bugger, too — snuggled up right next to her on the covers when they went to bed. But she was cold and had a kind of... blank face. But maybe Briley wasn't used to her yet or something? She smiled at it awkwardly.
"Trap?" the tiny pokémon asked, opening it's mouth in what seemed to be an attempt to smile. Briley shrugged and knelt down next to it, giving it a pet or two on it's smooth, cold head. Weird.
After a minute or so Briley stood back up and took in her surroundings. The path was only a short few steps away, so she walked onto it and saw that the sign directing to Littleroot was only a little ways away, just like she thought. She giggled a little as she caught sight of somebody taking a selfie in front of the sign with what looked like a very wriggly pokémon. Curiously, she thought why not? Might as well make friends.
But as she and Fauna, she decided to name the trapinch that, got closer and closer, Briley began to realize that she recognized the boy. "Finn?" she asked, slowly grinning and starting to jog over. "Finn! Hey, it's Briley! I haven't seen you since I got shipped off to the Academy! How's it goin'?"
fluffy was not planning to make it any easier for finnian. the eevee didn't seem to like the light haired's boy coddling. for easily the tenth time in the last five minutes, he scrambled away, trying to keep his distance from his trainer. "wait up, fluffy!" he called out, relying on his obscene amount of youngster energy to keep up with the flighty eevee.
"gotcha!" he crowed happily as he scooped fluffy back into his arms with a laugh. "man, fluffy, you gotta stop running away like that. s'not like i'm going to hurt you or anything." he wouldn't! he loved fluffy too much to even let the thought cross his mind. he kept his eyes on the road, snapping pictures with anything that looked remotely interesting. "man, hoenn's really hot," he complained, tugging at the collar of his tee shirt.
he heard something calling his name, bright green eyes scanning the surroundings for the source of it. he recognised briley's voluptuous hair anywhere. "cuz!" he hollered, breaking into a sprint. "hey!" he kept his hand outstretched for a high five. "it's been so long! how are you?" fluffy peered at the girl, wondering if she was just as irritating as his trainer.
"i've been good! look at this pokemon i got from professor birch!" he displayed fluffy like a trophy.

Briley chuckled at her cousin's antics, high fiving him and then watching as he held up and practically tortured the little pokémon in his arms. "I'm doing great, what about you? I graduated school by the way, and they transferred me here. But why are you here, kid? Shouldn't you be in Johto?" she waggled her eyebrowes at him jokingly. Briley actually knew why he was here, just like she knew why her sister was in Hoenn. They were all starting their journeys here for some reason or another, but she wanted to poke a little fun at Finn anyways.
"That's an Eevee, right?" she said, pulling out the pokédex Birch had given her despite knowing she was a Ranger. He said it'd be good for everyone to get as much knowledge as possible, and it'd be a good way for her to document what pokémon would be good for what during future quests and missions. "Are you planning on evolving it to anything in particular? I have a soft spot for Sylveon, y'know." she winked at him with a snicker. "But all their evo's are pretty rad, aren't they?"
The Trapinch had only just caught up to her trainer, breathing kind of heavy on it's stubby legs. But as Briley looked down at it, the little thing's body was wriggling like a Growlithe wagging it's tail, a big grin(?) on it's face. "Oh! This is Fauna, by the way. I just got her from Birch, too."
finnian was honestly glad to see a familiar face. sure, running away (he wouldn't call it that, seeing as he was a legal adult in his own right) had been terrifying at first, but knowing that there were relatives out there he could call upon if the need arose was oddly comforting.
"i finished high school!" he chirped, proud of the achievement. schooling hadn't really been for him. finnian felt out of place and could never really focus. he was just glad to be out of school and the academia, to be honest. he bounced on his heels, "you're a.... uh, what as it again?" he asked, drawing a blank. he wasn't as close to bunny and briley as he'd have liked to be, but they had all the time to catch up now.
"anyway... i left! i'm going on my own journey!" he insisted, looking a little nervous about what briley thought of his rash decision. n-not that it mattered! he was old enough to do what he wanted. he was a grown adult, please! he didn't need briley's acknowledgement for that. he tickled fluffy's cream coloured mane, making baby cooing noises. fluffy wasn't impressed. "it is!" he grinned. "i'm not sure about evolving yet though... fluffy's soooo fluffy, i don't know what i'd want to evolve him into!" maybe a flareon? he was conflicted.
finnian spied the trapinch and gushed over fauna as well. "oh! it's cute too!" he hurriedly tried to pick fauna up into his arms without thinking twice.

Briley nodded with a laugh, saying in a haughtily sort of proud voice, "Ohhhh, really? High school, huh?" She put her hands behind her head with a smirk. "Trying Ranger School, buster. That's where I went to become a Ranger." She quirked an eyebrow at him with a smirk. "High school is nothin' compared to what I've got under my belt."
She snickered a little, but then said in a much more casual voice, "I'm kidding really, but I did enjoy it. The Ranger School in Almia was so much better than high school, at least to me. And I went to a private one in freaking Kalos, like how much better could it get, right? Highly recommend," she said, and then with a couple of finger pistols, "Ranger School, I mean. Don't go back to High School. It sucks."
Briley's eyebrows rose at the sound of her little cousin up and leaving his home and starting his journey in Hoenn. "Oh, really?" she laughed, "Dude, power to ya. I ran away from home tons of times. Granted I just ended up on like, the second floor, before my parents caught me but y'know. It was still an adventure." She approved.
"Flareon are real fluffy," Briley said, looking at the none-to-pleased Eevee. That would probably suit it better than a supposedly-cuddly Sylveon. "Real sassy too, fits it I think. Don't suffocate it though kid, or it's gonna poke your eye out!" she laughed a little as it wriggled in Finn's arms. Poor thing, she felt sympathy for it, really.
Fauna cocked her head to the side as Finn picked her up, still grinning blankly. "Pinch?" she asked, but still grinned. She didn't seem all that choerent. Briley arched an eyebrow, dumbfounded a little, before shaking her head with a "What? Oh. You really think so?" She kneeled onto the ground, holding a hand out to the Eevee for it to approach if it wanted to. She looked up to the orange pokémon in her cousin's arms, a small side-smile creeping onto her face. "Yeah, I guess."
finnian cringed at the thought. if ranger school made high school sound like nothing... well, he wasn't sure if he could do it. it did, however, sound ten times cooler than high school would ever be, which had finnian grinning from ear to ear. "seriously?" he murmured in awe, "man, that's cool." he could have only wished that schooling was nearly as cool as briley's had been. his parents were well off, but not that well off - public high school was terrible and he was thankful that he was fast enough to run away from bullies trying to smash his camera lenses.
"a ranger, huh..." finnian murmured to himself, excited at the prospect of such a cool occupation. "what do you guys do?" he asked in interest, eyes wide. "you think someone like me can join something like that?"
bashfully, he rubbed the back of his neck with a meek smile. "heh, well, i can take perfect care of myself. i can take care of fluffy too." or the eevee would take care of himself. he was plenty independent, anyway. "fluffy and i are gonna be great pals, though!" he announced. the eevee rolled his eyes and snorted in amusement. he busied himself with acquainting himself to briley's scent, taking it in and remembering it. this one was trustworthy. and probably a little more responsible than finnian could ever be.
"man, it's super cute," he gushed, fumbling for his phone with one hand. he snapped a picture of him with the trapinch in his arms, looking at him all cutesy like. super cute. he gave her adoring scratches under the side of her jaw with a grin on his face, before noticing briley's interaction with the eevee. "oh, fluffy's first friend other than me! quick, hold still!" he steadied his phone and took several shots before the moment ended - fluffy pulled away to spite finnian, leaving him with a blurry picture and a sulky face. "aw."

Briley snickered at her cousin's wide range of emotions at her mention of the Ranger School. He seemed disgusted at first, but slowly grew interested. He was such a character! She couldn't get enough of it.
"We do things like save forests from fires, save pokémon from the grasps of evil, fly around the region on super-tough-awesome missions. You know, the gist," she said nonchalantly, looking at her nails and then to Finn with a suave air. "I mean, you'd probably be real great at it. Not to mention you'd get to see the whole region, and get all this important work done and you'll be known as a hero to tons of people. 'Course it'll take you a while to get up the ladder to say, my rank, but it's worth it."
Okay so, it'd only really take him like a few months or something really, but in those few months she planned to soar the the ranks of a Ranger. But she wouldn't tell him that.
Briley looked down at the Eevee as it sniffed her hand before reaching over it and giving it some light scratches between it's ears. "Yeah, well, if you keep smothering it I think this little bugger's gonna start disliking you more than it's liking you!" she laughed a little, but secretly hoped Finn would take it to heart. "I don't think it'll hate you or anything, but you wanna give 'em space. They're just like any person, they're not some stuffed toy. Isn't that right, cutie?" she curled her finger under the Eevee's chin for a couple more scritches while Finn took some selfies with Fauna.
She began to laugh a little at Fluffy's utter remorse of pictures, watching as her cousin's face fell. "Aw, it's fine, Finn. You'll get some good pictures later. Besides, sometimes remembering something in your head can be even better than a picture. Don't underestimate your mind, dork." She winked again.
the more briley spoke, the more excited it made finnian. "that's sooooo cool!" he gushed like an absolute fanboy. her faith in him to do well was a confidence boost. "you think i could do it?" he grinned. for a qualified ranger to tell that to him was an honour. "me and fluffy, rangers against the bad guys... we'd be great, huh?" he could just see it now. the ultimate tag team, finny and fluffy. his eyes gleamed in wonder and awe at the sheer thought of it.
"well, i'm not gonna let that happen," he smiled, looking confident that he could build up a strong relationship with fluffy. the eevee took to briley's scratches easily, enjoying the fact that she seemed to understand how a pokemon should be treated better than the bumbling fool he had been attached to. if anything, fluffy was starting to think that he was training the boy, not the other way round. he smirked when he had successfully botched the picture, keeping his distance from the light haired boy.
finnian sulked for a while longer and his lips thinned. "you're right," he laughed it off, saving the images nonetheless. they were still at the start of their adventure. there was plenty to be done. he stood up straight to straighten his clothes and clean his camera. "hey, cuz! where are you headed after this?"
Briley chuckled at her cousin's obvious excitement, it bursting through his eyes practically like sparks. "Definitely, squirt," she said with a sideways sort of smirk. "It doesn't take much to learn, really. Just dedication and the willingness to learn. Which, for the record, I think you're perfectly capable of if you put your mind to it." It really lifted her spirits to see a kid so interesting in the job that she loved. It'd be great if she could say she actually inspired someone to join the Rangers worldwide.
Briley seemed to understand the Eevee a little more than Finn. But that was to be expected from a ranger, right? Rolling her eyes a little, Briley decided to whisper a few tips to the pokémon as well. "As fun as it is to try and disobey him as much as possible, he just cares about you a lot," she said quietly so Finn wouldn't hear. "I know he might be a little annoying, but if you give him a chance and work with him a little, the two of you might get along better than you think." She gave the Eevee a subtle wink before returning her attention to Finn.
Briley shrugged loudly at her cousins question. "I'm headed to Oldale, I reckon. What about you, squirt? You need an adult to help you around the scary woods?" She made a funny face and held her hands out like claws, growling animatedly before bursting into quiet giggles.
considering that finnian was raised with the ruthlessness of high school that constantly told him what a failure he was with his incapability to focus for long periods of time, words that his cousin spoke hit close to his heart. someone having faith with him was a odd confidence booster, but it worked splendidly. his grin grew wide. "man, thanks." he hadn't realised how much he needed to hear stuff like that.
fluffy flicked his ears nonchalantly at what briley had to say. birch had promised them that too, that their trainers would love them unconditionally, and it was only right to do the same. he just hadn't imagined he'd be stuck with a hyperactive child. "vee," fluffy huffed, grooming himself absentmindedly as he tried to pretend to ignore briley's words. he cast a wayward glance at finnian with uncertainty.
finnian bounced about on his heels, peering off into the distance. "yep, i guess we're headed that way too!" he proclaimed, a glimmer in his eyes. he scoffed at the mention of monsters - those weren't real! r-right? - "hey, cuz, we'll race you there!" he didn't give her much time to react. he wasn't sticking around for monsters! the boy sped off faster than one could think, leaving briley in the dust. fluffy rolled his eyes and hurriedly chased after his dolt of a trainer.
Briley grinned a little, happy for her cousin getting such a little ego boost. She playfully messed up his hair with a wink. "No problem, kiddo." She was sure if he really put his head in the game and focused for once, he'd be an impeccable ranger. Not to mention his heart was about as pure as it gets, and who needs that more than a Pokémon Ranger?
She rolled her eyes at the Eevee, inducing a chuckle. The poor thing was only rebellious now because it had been expecting greatness from the start, but surely it cared more about Finn than it was letting them know. Glancing up at her cousin, she supposed that his ignorance to Fluffy's disdain was both the problem and the solution. If he realized that his pokémon seemed to dislike him so much, he'd surely find himself much more upset than the Eevee would have intended. But maybe his undying affection would be what kept the Eevee from leaving him altogether? She hoped so. Briley could see them becoming a great team if they worked at it.
She nodded as Finn confirmed he was headed towards Oldale, just like she assumed. But before she could even say anything, with her mouth wide open, the firecracker of a kid leaped forward in a sprint, shouting something about a race.
She smirked. If it was a race he wanted, a race was what he was gonna get.
Briley scooped up her Trapinch with smooth ease, springing onto her feet and easily catching up to her cousin and surpassing him. He might be young and sprightly, but she was trained and practiced. And also sprightly. Not to mention extremely competitive. But who cares, right?
