Magikarp lied motionlessly in a puddle as Fidel watched.[break][break]
Well, this should be clarified. Fidel needed a bit of time to think for herself. Her recent losses were easy to take at first, but over time, she developed a bit of self-doubt and decided to take a long walk to get over it. But... the memories of defeat just replayed in Fidel's brain, over and over like a broken recording, and she simply couldn't get over it. Thus, she walked from Petalburg all the way back to Route 101.[break][break]
Magikarp had been getting antsy to get out of it's Poke Ball (for what reason, Fidel didn't know, she supposed that splashing about got fun, once you got used to it), and she couldn't find a small, safe body of water for the life of her. Once Magikarp had gotten too impatient, it let itself out of it's Poke Ball and just splashed about until it found a nearby puddle, and just laid there.[break][break]
Instead of withdrawing Magikarp, the ponderous Fidel decided to take a seat on the dirt road and watch her Pokemon breath slowly, hoping to ease her mind off her thoughts. Which brings us to our current situation. A little girl sitting on the side of the road, watching a fish lay prone on land. She occasionally poked it with a stick, and after time, started talking to it.[break][break] "I dunno, Magikarp..." She started in a tone of worry, not quite caring about how delirious she seemed right now. "I understand that we should keep training, and I'm not gonna stop. But... maybe we should hold off until we find a place with lots of peaceful water. What do you think?" Magikarp flopped once. Fidel took that as a no, and started forming her opinions based off of a fish Pokemon's spasms.[break][break]
"Yeah, you're right. But, I mean, I still don't like the idea of you practically suffocating in battle. It's kinda..." And so the twelve-year old girl kept talking to a Magikarp on the road, her worries getting slowly alleviated by something that couldn't talk. It made her feel better, better than if she just went on walking forever, so why stop? This went on for several hours, without Fidel noticing the time fly by.

walking on this route guarantees an encounter with a trainer. there are always those new trainers that had just started off on their journey. like her. but emma's determined. she doesn't want to be one of these new people -- she's going to be the champion, just you wait.
emma brings a hand up to block out the afternoon sun, peering down the road. it's a little hard to see anything. "hey alice, can you look out there and see if you can find anything? the swablu chirps lazily from her head, but takes off anyways. she soon blinks out of sight, and for a moment emma panics and starts running ahead because it looks like she's never going to come back but -- oh.
there's another girl there. alice circles around her, chirping. she lands near the magikarp and glances at it curiously. "don't attack it." emma orders before looking at the girl. she looks a little...down. she's sitting on the side of the road. emma cautiously waves at her.

■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
"Well I mean, sure your nose runs and your feet smell, but that really isn't that accurate to reality--" She ended her midday rambling when a Swablu lands near Magikarp. Magikarp flops to face it-- sorta. Not really face it, as both sides of it's face are facing the sky and the earth, respectively. Magikarp points it's front towards the Swablu, but it's eyes were still unfocused as ever. Inside, Magikarp saw the Swablu as a rather curious Pokemon, but didn't feel anything more. If the bird were a threat, then Fidel would withdraw Magikarp to safety, surely.[break][break] "Hello, there." Fidel said to the Swablu, still dazed from being snapped out of her conversational trance. A bird Pokemon, huh? Did it belong to somebody? It acted fairly domesticated, what with it's non-aggression towards Magikarp thus far. Her answer came in the form of another character coming towards her from behind, and Fidel looked at this person with a dazed expression as well. She became a bit more rational when her socialization instincts kicked in, though.[break][break]
Fidel waves back at the girl with her well-cooked arm. She looked a bit younger than her. Weird, since she'd seen nothing but teenagers and adults on her Pokemon journey thus far. Or maybe they were the weird ones. She seemed... happier than Fidel, somehow. Definitely more enthusiastic. Not to say Fidel wasn't enthusiastic, but at this very moment, that trait wasn't showing in the orange-clad girl.[break][break]
"Heya." And then Magikarp flopped to turn to the girl with white hair. This time, however, it moved. It flopped along the road, bouncing on the dirt, slowly but surely approaching the girl a few feet away. It then gave a curt "Karp." and stopped moving. It was breathing slowly, enough to be visible, but this only seemed more awkward. Fidel silently stood up in courtesy, putting her hands in her pockets. She had an amiable glow in her eyes, and her tone was completely casual; clearly, the therapy had worked wonders for her self-doubt. "My name is Fidel. This is Magikarp. What's up?"
Post by emma kasperson on Jun 25, 2015 22:26:09 GMT
swablu turns her beak at it and looks away pretentiously. it's just an ordinary magikarp. nothing more, nothing less. although alice doesn't attack, she doesn't want to socialize with such a useless pokemon, either. the girl, however, is more interactive. she's around emma's age. the pokemon chirps happily at her instead, fluffing her wings up a little.
emma's glad that alice listens to her for something. she glances at the girl waving. "woah, what happened to your arms?" she asks, pointing to the mess of calluses and bumps running down them. she's not exactly one for politeness. kids her age usually aren't.
her attention's directed back to the magikarp. she tilts her head. emma leans over the fish, but she doesn't really want to touch it. "hii..." she says. it looks slimey. and scaley. but it's a nice fish. "my name's emma. this is alice." she reaches out a hand. the swablu chirps and lands on her head. thanks a lot, now she looks kinda dumb. but she continues anyways.
"i'm a trainer! i want to be a champion someday. what about you? you wanna battle?"
Fidel looked a bit uncomfortable, talking about her arms. Magikarp flopped back to her side as she held her wrist in a nervous manner, her eyes wandering to the right. Fire. Pain. Tears. A lady in black teaching her, and a lady in white helping her. "...I learned my first Pokemon lesson." The scarred girl said enigmatically, her face illustrating clear regret and sorrow. This expression really didn't belong to somebody of their age, but it made it's way to Fidel, and that's all that mattered.[break][break]
Clear your thoughts. You've been talking to Magikarp about this, right? You should feel a bit better now. That's in the past. Don't be weird with this new girl. But she still kinda... felt bad about it. That type of stuff still hurt to think about. Attempting to clear her mind once more, Fidel just went into the conversation and didn't think about anything else.[break][break]
Her eyes focused on the girl, Emma was her name, and the cloud bird perched on her head. She seemed less troubled now, and more friendly. Fidel didn't know how to smile when meeting somebody yet, so she just had a neutral yet curious expression. Meeting new people was always interesting, after all. "It's nice to meet you, Emma, Alice." She shook hands with the white-haired girl, making brief eye contact with the Swablu. The blue Pokemon seemed a bit... haughty? She must be imagining things.[break][break]
Fidel further introduced herself, on the prompt that Emma gave her. Man, the other girl knew how to introduce herself pretty quickly. She should learn. "Me? I'm also a trainer, yeah." She nodded. "But my goal isn't to become the champion. I want to..." Become stronger? No, her goal wasn't to become stronger. It never was. The reason she wanted to become stronger was because she wanted to continue. To keep going. To... "...have an amazing adventure with my Pokemon. I could become champion, I guess, but..." And Fidel ended the thought with a shrug, almost as if disregarding the title of champion as unimportant. In a way, the idea of championship was boring, she found. Why sit at the top of a mountain when you can climb another one?[break][break]
But she digressed. Now, battle? Fidel frowned once more. Man, was she frowny. She was probably more frowny than the other girl right now. She imagined she'd be the dark version or the rival of the other girl, and they'd have an epic showdown in the future. Well, if this were one of her video games. After her little ramble session with Magikarp, her imagination was just running wild. Back to battle![break][break] "I'd love to battle! Me and Magikarp will try our best!" She said, putting on a grin. Inside, she knew that she'd probably lose to this girl. As cute as Alice was, it could probably attack, and that automatically makes it the victor. That, and, looking around, there were no large bodies of water other than puddles. Not that they helped, they'd just make the battle last longer. Still, opportunity was opportunity, and when there was an opportunity to make Magikarp stronger, then she'd take it.

fidel looks obviously uncomfortable at the thought of sharing. emma waits patiently for an answer. her first pokemon lesson? that seems way too extreme! "that must've been a horrible pokemon lesson!" emma says angrily. "one day we'll hunt that person down together and i'll beat the crap out of her for you, okay?" she says at an attempt to comfort her. fidel looks entirely too sad for her age, and emma couldn't stand it.
"what does that lady look like?" emma asks, prodding a bit more. that's all she needs to know. once she meets her, she'll challenge her to a battle. and once she beats all of her pokemon, emma will beat her up herself. she takes fidel's hand and gives it one, big shake.
fidel's goal isn't to become champion, but to have an adventure. well, technically that's a given on the path to becoming a champion. emma knows that she'll have a great time exploring and battling on her way up to the top. and this battle would be one of the first steps.
"okay, let's go alice!" emma says, walking back to give them a little distance. the swablu's excited at the prospect of battle. she flaps her light, cottony wings and dives to peck at the magikarp twice.

■ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Fidel wasn't all that afraid of telling the other girl who had burnt her. The lady wanted nothing to do with her, she knew that much. Therefore, it'd be pretty harmless if this other girl decided to try. Besides, what were the chances that she'd actually meet the lady in black? It'd never happen... right?[break][break]
Still, the battle was starting, and she didn't want to stop any momentum. "Hrm... I'll tell you after this, Emma." And in a flash, Fidel was in battle mode. Her eyes burned with the fire of competition, no matter what daunting weakness she currently had. She wasn't ecstatic for battle, but she was prepared for it. Like solid steel waiting for an attack, rather than a dog chasing cars. [break][break]
Her goal, currently, was still to survive. She had no attacking moves on Magikarp yet, much to her dismay. She'd get one someday, but right now, she just wanted do the best she could and get stronger because of it. It was only the respectful thing to do, both for Emma and for herself. Fidel replied to Emma's command in kind.[break][break]
"Magikarp, dodge it!" Magikarp focused it's eyes for once and flopped to the left as the Swablu was about to hit it. Barely missing, the Magikarp kept it's sole skyward eye focused on the avian foe. "Head towards the trees, Magikarp." The trees would provide protection. Cover. Somewhere to hide. As useful as water would be at the moment, Fidel would have to make do with her fish Pokemon.[break][break]
Slowly but surely, Magikarp flopped towards the nearest tree. it was rather regular sized, but enough to hide Magikarp's body at the right angle. Awaiting the next attack from the much more mobile Pokemon, Fidel and Magikarp both watched in silent suspense.
Post by emma kasperson on Jun 27, 2015 3:28:17 GMT
"okay!" emma chirps. she's going to hunt down this lady and absolutely teach her a something on teaching, because that's not the way to give a lesson -- much less a girl's first one! if anything, emma would be happy to teach fidel her first real lesson. she herself didn't exactly know very much, but she can pass on advice, that's for sure!
"alice, try to find the magikarp. when you see it use peck and sing." she says. the fish may have slid out of their view, but alice is fast. she has mobility and sight on her side. the swablu chirps in acknowledgement and speeds off in the direction of the trees, searching for the familiar wash of red and yellow.
emma suddenly realizes that this is her first pokemon battle -- excitement rushes through her veins. she smiles; her journey couldn't have started any better. she met a new friend who she can battle with and maybe meet again. emma watches in baited breath as the swablu weaves herself through the trees.
when alice finally finds the fish the bird dive bombs for it, her fluffy cloud wings alighting on the ground to inflict damage.
To be honest, Fidel was surprised that she hadn't lost yet. Magikarp was starting to splash faster. Though it may seem worthless to somebody else, it meant the world to Fidel. "Yeah, Magikarp! Good work, keep moving!" Fidel cheered, her voice echoing into the forest. There was a certain glimmer in her eyes that wasn't sad anymore. It seemed that joy filled her heart for that moment, and she felt nothing but pride for Magikarp.[break][break]
Progress, they were actually making progress![break][break]
Meanwhile, Magikarp was just as pleasantly surprised at this turn of events. Nothing blacked out. Vision hadn't faded yet. Things were going well... but then it spotted a ball of sky blue coming right at it. Attempting to jump to dodge it again, it's efforts were to no avail. Magikarp took the Peck attack head on.[break][break]
Move. Keep moving, was the command. Magikarp started Splashing around at a more aggressive pace than usual, sending it bouncing off the trees, off the rocks, everywhere. The angles that Magikarp was using Splash had become spontaneous, as if doing some spasmodic dance that really needed an exorcist. ...Was that a bit too flowery?[break][break]
Well, uh, to simplify the purple prose, Magikarp used Splash. Violently.
Post by emma kasperson on Jun 29, 2015 3:05:36 GMT
fidel's getting excited. safe to say, emma is too. her heart is pumping. sweat coats her palms. emma nearly wants to jump and scream in anticipation. she can imagine herself at the edge of the arena now, fighting the elite four. this is exactly what she's going to feel like, maybe even more. this is the first step to that moment.
"yes!" emma shouts when alice finally goes through with her attack. magikarp quickly bounces out of the way though, splashing off rocks and trees and whatever it can land on. puffs of clouds are shed from alice's wings as she tries to dodge it. but it's in vain. she's even knocked a little to the side from one of its splashes.
she hadn't expected this fish to do that! "sing at it!" emma says. swablu flies up higher, out of the way through the branches. she opens her beak. it whistles. the soundwaves are aimed down at the magikarp, and after that attack alice swiftly follows it down, aiming to peck at it again.
Magikarp did damage! Magikarp inflicted injury on another Pokemon! This had never happened before; most of the time, it was just a countdown to defeat, but... did she have a chance? Did she really? Was there a chance of her and Magikarp winning a fight? In the back of her mind, she still knew she was highly likely to lose. But... that single light of hope defined Fidel's character. Shaped her. Formed her. She ate, slept, and breathed that light of hope.[break][break]
At this point, Fidel and Magikarp were on overdrive. This... is a battle! Not some one-sided beatdown, but real fighting, with real action! Magikarp even inadvertently did damage, something Fidel would have never predicted. She kept her more focused expression, too into the match to really think of any emotion but competition, but a small smile found it's way to her face. a real fight, huh? She liked the sound of that.[break][break]
Back to the match... The music was most definitely a bad sign. Fidel knew this almost instinctively. "Dodge right, Magikarp!" Magikarp flops to the right, closer to a nearby boulder. The soundwaves reverberated through the ground next to it; a sleepy, relaxing sound. Even feeling the sound of it made Magikarp a bit winded. However, there was a bird Pokemon coming right at it, so it had no time for pause.[break][break]
Fidel tensed up. At this rate, Magikarp had no chance of avoiding the attack. Then... a boulder was next to it. Something ignited in Fidel's head that prompted a rather dangerous decision. Still on the fever high of actually doing damage, Fidel burst out with commanding ferocity. "SPLASH OFF THE BOULDER! Just RAM into that Pokemon, Magikarp!"[break][break]
Magikarp, running purely on an instinct that wasn't even native to it's species, flopped onto the boulder. Spotting the sky blue Pokemon coming at it, it used every muscle under it's orange scales to deliver a loud Splash, sending it careening towards the Swablu. For once during a battle, Magikarp let out it's cry. "KAAAAAAAARP!"
out of all the first battles emma could've gotten, she never expected it to be with a magikarp. and an unexpectedly strong one. alice is simply too small and light to withstand the force of its splash. maybe if she was a little more big and heavier, she wouldn't be having as much trouble as she had now.
emma chances a glance at fidel. she looks a lot happier than she was before.there's even a small smile on her face, but it's obvious that she's focused on the battle. emma couldn't help but smile too. magikarp are infamous for their uselessness. maybe that's why fidel was so down earlier. but if alice faints and emma loses, than she guesses that it isn't too embarrassing.
the magikarp bounces off the boulder with a surprising show of strength. alice follows it, but it's obvious that it's a bad choice. the fish barrels into the bird, sending them both careening into the ground. "alice!" emma nearly returns the swablu right then and there, but there's something that prevents her from doing that.
the bird is getting crushed under the magikarp. it's obviously in pain, but it's a prime chance to inflict any physical damage on the pokemon. alice lifts her head and struggles. she lunges at the fish with her beak, the sharp weapon ready to rip into magikarp's scaly flesh.
When the Swablu retaliated with two Pecks and knocked out Magikarp, Fidel's shoulders slumped and the smile on her face faded. One could shrug it off as simple disappointment, but there was a bit of hope lost at that moment. The possibility that Magikarp could actually win had disappeared right before her very eyes. Her voice seemed rather hollow when she gave a short sound of shock. "...Oh."[break][break] She was surprised. She shouldn't be surprised. Magikarp was going to lose, there was no question. Why had she gotten her hopes up? Walking up to her Pokemon, she returned it without a word, only sparing a somewhat haunted glance at Alice. She shouldn't have gotten her hopes up. She expected too much from Magikarp, at least, for now. Either way, Fidel lost, and that was--[break][break]
Her face, blank with defeat, suddenly grew a shade darker. A searing laser had ignited in her eyes. What was she saying? This was blasphemy! Magikarp showed progress, and it didn't matter if she won or lost. All she needed was to become stronger, and look! She became stronger! If anything, she should be happy with these results. Yeah, Magikarp did great! A winning grin etched itself on her visage as she turned to Emma.[break][break]
"Good battle!" And she extended a burnt arm to the other girl, giving her an amiable grin. All trace of bitter defeat had disappeared, her sudden epiphany done it's job splendidly. "You really did well. Me and Magikarp need to get stronger for next time!" If there was a next time. Well, Fidel would make sure there was a next time. She'd love to battle more with Emma. The other girl was rather nice and fun and happy, as opposed to older people, who brooded often.[break][break] "Now, as for the one who gave me these scars..." Fidel remembered the lady in black as well as she could, and her mood became immediately somber. "Short, black hair. Angry blue eyes. She wore black, and had a tuft of red hair. It was my first Pokemon battle." Fidel nodded. The lady in black may be a bad person... or maybe not. But Fidel did want to prove herself one day to her, and if Emma wanted to help her, it would be appreciated. She gave the other girl a small smirk, aggressively confident in nature.[break][break]
the magikarp finally faints. emma fist pumps, whispering a "yes!" to herself. alice flies towards her and lands on her head, haughtily preening its ruffled feathers. "nice job alice!" emma compliments, letting the bird have her way for once.
she spares a glance at fidel. she didn't look too happy. emma feels a bit guilty for that. fidel must've suffered many losses because of her magikarp. she was ecstatic when it finally hit alice. emma can see why it's exciting -- when such a weak pokemon finally gets an attack in, there's the hope that it can beat the odds. but then something changes in fidel. she looks a lot more happier now. she grins, turning towards emma and extending a hand.
emma gladly takes it. she glances down at the burns and gives it a firm up and own of a shake. she's not sure why fidel's so much more happier, but she's not going to question it. "thanks! so did you! we can rematch next time, right alice?" emma chirps. alice lifts her beak, but there's no denying that she enjoyed the battle. fidel's fun to battle. it's refreshing to finally meet someone her age -- not that meeting older people were bad. she just wished she could make more friends with people like her.
she looks at fidel in determination, soaking in all the information that she's told. okay. short black hair. angry blue eyes. dresses in black. red tuft of hair. emma takes all the info in, imagining said lady. she must be really ugly and mean to do that kind of thing.
"yeah! we can get strong and beat her like she did to you!" emma squeaks, the shining moment clear in her mind. alice and magikarp shooting off a hyper beam, leaving that lady burned and crying and running away! yeah, that would definitely be the crowning moment.
Fidel gave the girl a salute. Alright! An ally! Even if it isn't against the lady in black, Fidel was sure she made a friend. She'd remember Emma in the future. hopefully, they could have plenty of rematches. When Magikarp got stronger, she had PLENTY of scores to settle. But, at the moment, she just had to keep at her work.[break][break] "Yeah, nobody can stop us." There was a flash in her eyes, a mix between ambition and promise. A little bit of predator, too. Fidel wanted to make sure that she, and right now, Emma, would be unstoppable. She'd steamroll anyone who got in the way! It was an unsung, yet powerful promise, to herself and the world.[break][break]
Fidel looked up at the sky, which was becoming her favorite shade of orange. Huh, were they that busy battling? It'd get dark soon. "The sun is setting... I better be heading back to Petalburg." She nodded to Emma, giving a smile that shined in the sunlight. She had a wonderful backdrop behind her; a tangerine setting sun, and a sky that was quickly turning that nighttime shade of violet. "I look forward to our next meeting, Emma!"[break][break]
