beach parties are a blur, especially after a drink or two. it's in his slightly drunken stupor that he finds himself being gravitated towards the stage of horrible but enthused singing. it's open mic night, and whoever summons up enough courage to finally get up there and sing is cheered on by the rowdy crowd below.
cain finds himself a victim of mob mentality and cheers along the people with them. not like it's a bad thing. today's the day for cheesy lyrics and catchy tunes. it's better than getting wasted, anyways. he sways along to the tune humming along.
when the last person finally gets off of the stage he eagerly anticipates the next round of bad singing. he sees the host suddenly point at him -- woah, he didn't do anything. but then people are suddenly nudging him onto the stage, and before he knows it he's standing in front of a crowd of people.
cain nervously smiles at them. he backs up, hands in the air but that just enables them to shove a mic into his hands. oh god, he's going to have to sing. he looks helplessly into the crowd -- please, someone help.
Oh no. Syndra had wandered over near the beach party to check out what was going on and not only did she get swept up in the crowd cheering for mediocre singing, she couldn't even escape the cage that was the mob. When she tried the current of force would block her and push her back. Now this whole thing was not her cup of tea. Not only was she not used to karaoke but large crowds were out of her comfort zone. By no means was she a bad singer but that didn't mean she wanted to risk getting called out and singing in public.
When she finally found her out, the green haired girl tried to slowly creep out and back to the empty beachside. That was when the new song started to play. It was a song that was fairly popular nowadays on the radio and such. Back home her brothers would rant about it and make her listen to the song when they could so she knew the lyrics. But she wasn't the one that was called out tonight for this song. Thank Arceus. She was going to make her escape here. Leave and not turn back. Until she made the mistake of looking back and recognizing the person that had been chosen.
"Cain?" she would say aloud to herself though it would fade into a whisper among the chanting of the crowd. Biting her bottom lip as she took another glance at her exit rapidly closing, her disappointment rose. How was she going to play this? On one hand, she did not want to sacrifice herself. On the other Cain was helpless and somehow caught in this situation. Cursing herself for her next decision, she walked away from the hole in the crowd and dove further in until she managed to get next to the familiar face. Not even giving him a chance to figure out what was going on or what she was doing, Syndra took Cain's hand where he held the mic and pulled both his hand and the mic to herself. And just in time.
"Nice to meet you Where you been?"
Her tone of voice when singing went a bit lower and bolder than what she usually used when speaking. Her friendly tone would still linger but underneath a bolder and seemingly fiercer. The crowd around them seemed stunned but went with it at the same time, cheering her on further as she continued. Pulling the bow that tied the locks of her hair in front of her to loosen them down, shaking her head to let the green strands fall freely where they may. She'd lock eyes with Cain so he'd know who his savior was, if one could call it that. She wasn't going to sacrifice herself without making Cain understand his mistake.
"I could show you incredible things Magic, madness, heaven, sin Saw you there and I thought oh my god Look at that face, you look like my next mistake"
As she sung these lines, she'd drag Cain up to the stage with her whether he was willing to or not. If he had resisted she would have left him then and there to embarrass himself on his own. Once she had made it up there, she'd raise her free hand and slowly caress the side of Cain's face to fit with the lyrics of the song. If they were going to entertain a crowd, Syndra's pride called to her to do it right despite how much her will did not want to. In her mind she was trying to imagine the crowd was not there as she kept on.
"Love's a game, wanna play"
She'd let go of Cain's mic holding hand to let him take over the next part of the same verse. After all, she wasn't going to do the entire thing.
oh god, he doesn't know what's happening. the crowd gathers around him. it's chaotic, and before he knows it he's on stage. he stutters, because while cain loves to talk and socialize he's by no means confident on stage. he can call himself a decent singer -- but that's only in the shower, secluded from the pressure of a crowd or another person.
he feels small fingers grab his wrist and pull. cain turns his head and reels in surprise. "s-syndra?!" why is she here? he's instantly thankful, because as soon as the song starts she's singing. and she sings very well. there's a new type of confidence he sees in her. something more than the formal, debonoir of a girl he saw back in the exploration.
cain smiles wide, because it seems that she's his knight in shining armor tonight. he doesn't dare say anything to break her focus. she takes his hand and drags him onto the stage. safe to say, now he's a lot more willing to go, if only because of syndra.
the crowd whoops and hollers as she runs a hand down his face. cain's face turns hot. she's really getting into it. he isn't sure if he can do the same, but he can only try to return the favor.
he feels a rush of nervousness when she lets go of his hand. okay, it's go time. he stutters, but at the crowd's encouragement cain smiles and keeps going.
"new money, suit and tie i can read you like a magazine"
he sings, winking at syndra. now that he's started he feels a lot more confident then he was before. he sways slowly to the catchy beat.
"ain't it funny rumours fly and i know you heard about me so hey, let's be friends i'm dying to see how this one ends"
it actually isn't too bad once he thought about it. it's just singing, right? the crowd roars, encouraging them along. taylor swift is possibly the best or worse artist they could have chosen for the song.
"grab your passport and my hand i could make bad girls good for a weekend."
he says, proffering his hand to syndra. it's a little hard to match the lyrics with everything else, but grabbing hands is no problem. cain offers his mic to syndra. with both hands outstretched it nearly looks like a hug.
if she wants him to sweep her off her feet, he'd do it no problem.
For a moment, Syndra was not sure if Cain was going to make it or not. There was a brief thought of whether she should intervene in this again but that was erased relatively swiftly once Cain began to pick up where she left it off. At the wink, her previous demeanor returned for a bit as her hand rose up to cover up a laugh that forced itself up at the sight. The laughter wouldn't last but her smile would. It helped to ignore the crowd and Cain was not by any means a bad singer. Certainly better than some of the other performances she had to stay through earlier that evening.
As the song continued and Cain kept up with it, Syndra took note how much more comfortable he had gotten. Maybe she wasn't needed after all but it was too late to turn back now. She was neck deep in this and the latest roar of the crowd reminded her of that. On the last few lyrics of the verse she knew that it would be her turn soon. While she was not looking forward to it, her game face came back on where her friendly smile shifted to a more mischievous one. Her brow rose as she noticed that there was a mild change to the last line to fit the current situation and she scoffed lightly, luckily away from the mic so only Cain would likely notice she did such a thing. She'd place her right hand into Cain's left to accept his hand as her other hand grabbed the mic to go into the chorus.
"So it's gonna be forever Or it's gonna go down in flames"
Her eyes remained locked on Cain's as she'd walk him into a slight waltz of sorts, though she made most of the effort to play along with the lyrics. With a small twirl soon she was leaning back in his arms. She wouldn't do the dip without his permission though. After all, she didn't wanna get dropped on the ground and embarrass herself more than she already was. Holding the microphone above her head as she leaned her head back as if to look up at the sky, she pressed on.
"You can tell me when it's over If the high was worth the pain Got a long list of ex-lovers"
Suddenly she'd swing her head to the side to look towards the audience in a sort of hypnotic glare. Her devious smile came forward much more intensely but the crowd didn't seem to notice among more shouting and happy cries rooting for them to continue.
"They'll tell you I'm insane Cause you know I love the players"
She'd pick herself up on this part and lean her face closely to Cain's as if in a flirtatious way before abruptly pulling away. Arceus forbid that someone else she knew caught her doing this stuff. Then again, her family was back at home so there was really no way right?
"And you love the game"
Now returning the wink that she received only moments before, she'd placed the mic back into Cain's hands so that he'd keep the pace going. After all, with the lyrics of the song, it was going to get more interesting to figure out how to choreograph it on the fly. On the hand off, she mouthed the words "Surprised to see me?" so the mic wouldn't pick up on the question.

Well its worse but it is blank space so hard to write for it
cain's actually enjoying himself for once. he feels free. he doesn't regret getting lightly drunk, or going to sing karaoke. he's having fun, and it seems that syndra is, too. he's glad that she's here. if she wasn't, who knows what would've happened. cain would have probably made of an even bigger fool of himself. cain changes the lyrics just to fit the situation, and syndra notices. she scoffs, but he laughs anyways. part of his breathy tones touch the mic but it doesn't matter. it's all about having fun now. syndra slides a hand into his own and grabs the mic. she starts to sin again.
his eyes are only on her as he follows the slow walts. he plays along, twirling her until she leans back onto him. cain grips her tight and makes sure she doesn't fall, because that'd be embarrassing for both of them. he laughs, giving her big grin. her follows her gaze, looking into the big crowd that's gathered. they cheer them on. it feels like a big performance -- something out of a big show or on tv, but it's only a karaoke party. how...serendipitous. a pleasant surprise.
he leans her back onto her feet. she sings again, leaning close to her face. the crowd claps and roars again. cain blushes, because he's never expected that move from syndra. there's either a hidden side of her that he's never seen, or she's just a really great actor. they continued for a while switching back and forth between the mic and dancing.
"...got a long list of ex-lovers they'll tell you i'm insane."
the finally get near to the end, and cain's actually breathless from all that singing and dancing. how artists manage to do both in concerts for long hours is unknown to him. he leans close to syndra and offers the mic as the song concludes, urging her to sing the last part with him.
"but i got a blank space baby, and i'll write your name."
The song lyrics kept going and going to the point Syndra thought it would never end even though she knew exactly where in they lyrics they were. For the most part no matter what Syndra had done Cain had gone along with it no matter how exorbitant her actions were. It was somewhat surprising considering that Syndra's goal was to make him regret getting placed into this position but not regrettable. At this point the two might have looked like naturals on the stage and putting on such a show yet towards the end, even Syndra was getting worn out. She was used to getting worn down with taking care of her brothers before and now training with her pokemon. While that all helped she was still on her last few lifelines here. She was just going with the flow and trying to hold out to the end though. One look at Cain and the girl could tell he was in a similar situation.
A few times Syndra also took notice of how Cain's face would light up a hue of red, but she mostly chalked that one up to embarrassment or otherwise nerves. She wouldn't call him out on it since that would be giving him leverage to call her out on several things she did that she would not want to get brought back up. Instead since the two kept exchanging the mic between verses, it was her turn to breath and recompose herself. Thankfully Cain hadn't done anything too daring or out of place so when the last part of the song came up, she recomposed herself enough for the final line. Cain leaned towards her and Syndra leaned against him in turn, placing her hand on the mic with his as she joined in on the final line.
"But I got a blank space baby And I'll write your name..."
She kept an eye on Cain in case he was about to pass out from either exhaustion or embarrassment despite how well received the duet had in the end. Once the two finished, Syndra's first response was to cut off the switch on the microphone so they could breath. The second response was actually breathing. Taking the ribbon that she removed from her hair earlier, she tied the entirety of her green locks up in a high ponytail to give herself some air and breathing room. The crowd continued to give cheers and rounds of applause to which Syndra flashed a smile as she waved high for the temporary fans. As she gave the mic back to the host and walked with Cain off the stage, she took a final exhale of relief before directing her attention back at her duet partner. "I swear Cain, I always catch you in the weirdest situations."
She wasn't sure if he remembered the time they met on route 102 when he was drugged. Luckily Syndra had not smelled any drugs on him the entirety of the duet so she didn't think he was high so this time he had less excuses. At the very least now, after this she could escape from the party and then hide in a corner until the experience faded from everyone else's memory. "Next time I'm not going to save you from the singing and you'll have to do it on you're own." Yeah she said that but who knows if she honestly meant it.
they dance in tandem, like it'd been planned all along. the moments slow. cain finds himself simply enchanted by the say syndra sings and dances. they go together so naturally. it's like they can read each other's minds. it's tiring, but cain quickly finds that it doesn't matter. it's so fun, he barely notices.
cain isn't usually one to get flustered. in fact, he's the one who flusters people. but there's something different about being on stage and performing, as if they're supposed to be acting normal after this. he knows for sure that they'll be more than just acquaintances, from now on. cain could even dare to call them friends -- perhaps, a little bit more. at least he hopes, from his side.
but he's afraid to do anything more than a wink. whatever smooth, flirtatious moves are credited to syndra. and every time it happens his face turns a bright red. the heat isn't only from physical exercise, it's also from slight embarrassment. but it doesn't matter. the crowd sucks it right up. they're ecstatic, especially after the ending. they whoop and holler, clapping so loud that cain's ears feels like they'll pop.
cain has the dumbest grin on his face; one that he can't seem to wipe off. he nearly forgets to turn off the mic, and instantly goes to switch it off when syndra does. he's nearly numb as they walk off stage. "you mean the best situations?" he laughs, because it seems as if fate's brought them together each time, from route 101, to the exploration, to here.
cain mock-pouts. he feigns a hurt face, although it's obvious that he's joking. "aww really? but you're such a great singer." he walks a little more before stopping and turning towards her. it seems that syndra is the knight in shining armor tonight.
For one reason or another, whether it be from Cain's grin or from what he said, Syndra didn't believe he actually learned his lesson. While she was partially disappointed which showed in a slow shaking of her head, it didn't actually much bother or affect her. It wasn't her responsibility or anything to make sure Cain learned from his mistakes. So she simply exhaled a breath. "I think your perception of the best situations need work," she stated half-jokingly as she placed her hands behind her back. She wasn't fooled by Cain's pout but she would have been surprised if anyone was fooled by it. He did compliment her singing which embarrassed her a tad as she glanced away towards the beach at the mention of it, but her eyes did land back on the male. "Let's not mention that again."
And then finally as she gave up on any thanks for the save comments, Cain finally showed some form of thanks in appreciation. It made the corner of her lips perk into a smile, reminding her of a slice of home. "If you really do appreciate what I did, then do me a favor and not get into anymore trouble?" She paused, knowing that so far from what she had seen that wasn't a possibility. So she edited her statement without hesitation, "But who am I kidding? At least not trouble that I can see?" She took a few steps forward, walking with no destination in mind, then suddenly turning back to Cain. "So what was the plan after this? More late night karaoke for you?"
despite what may have happened tonight, cain's still happy about how it turned out. his heart's still pumping, and he could feel sweat sticking to his clothes, but cain knows that it's one of the best nights he's had in a while. and it's all because of syndra. it couldn't have gone any better.
"it could've been the worst situation ever. but you like, saved me." he gushes, giving her a grateful smile. she looks away when he compliments her singing. cain's reluctant to leave it alone. it's probably a hidden talent, since now syndra's retreated back to her prim, proper self.
cain hesitates, because he's not quite sure if he can not get into trouble again. it seems to follow him whever he goes, despite his best efforts. "yeah, i can do that." cain smiles. he doesn't want to suck anybody else into trouble, much less syndra.
she suddenly turns around. cain thinks for a moment, because he can admit that he didn't really have a goal in mind.
he draws his hands up and shakes his head firmly. "definitely not karaoke." he deadpans. "i don't know, to be honest. what about you?"
The female trainer couldn't help but sigh in relief at Cain's assurance that he'd try to keep out of trouble in the presence of her. It was a good thing and a smile of thanks shown on Syndra's face. "Good," she said cheerfully. Upon learning that Cain had no other plans for the night, the girl laughed. It was almost like witnessing the life of a blooming college kid with no idea what to do with their life. He seemed adamantly against doing karaoke again and Syndra couldn't much blame him. That said it didn't mean she wasn't going to tease him. "Not karaoke? What happened to it being one of the best situations," she said before reaching her right hand over to give him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. To be honest she had no other plans for the night either aside from forgetting what happened a few moments ago so when questioned on it she gave her honest answer. "None aside from returning to the pokemon center and resting but it's a bit early for that." She shrugged unsure of where to go from here. With another hard exhale in an attempt to readjust her breathing to get enough oxygen into her lungs, she looked around ignoring the deafening roars of the crowd still focused on the karaoke stage behind them. "I'm sure there's something else that we could kill time with," but whatever it was, it wasn't going to be the green haired girl thinking of it as she waited for Cain's thoughts.
[attr=class, ashes] syndra sighs in relief, and from then on cain vows to try to not get in as much trouble as he did before. even if that means to say no a little bit more often. he can't ever deny someone for their requests, however outlandish. it's just how cain is. "well, i guess if you came with me i wouldn't mind again." he winks. he'll be damned if he's forced into singing again, and if it was just himself, it's even worse.
it looks like syndra doesn't really have anything planned either. cain puts a finger to his chin and wonders. the beach is always open -- they can go there and build a sandcastle or something. but it's starting to get late. there's always the bar -- but he'd rather not get drunk and get into even more trouble.
"i'm not really sure..." cain murmurs. right after he says it the power suddenly blows. the music behind them stops, and the light go out. they're left in the dark. everything goes quiet. cain can only hear the gasps and groans of the people around him and some kricketot chirping. he starts laughing a bit.
"Oh no," Syndra said immediately as if involuntarily responding to Cain's comment about going with him on the karaoke stage again. She'd wave off the notion to distinctly show she was not into the idea generally not paying much attention to the wink that was given to her, "No more singing. That was one time only." Now this wasn't to say that the green haired girl didn't have fun on stage but it was not good for her nerves or her heart. The embarrassment she felt was pretty high up there. This was how she knew that she didn't want to be a coordinator in the first place. Those guys were used to the spotlight and getting attention from it while Syndra was just fine avoiding it.
Before she could throw up anymore defense as to avoiding the stage again, there was a small explosion-like sound which caused her to turn directly back to the stage. The beach was now silent save the surprise of the crowd that gathered and kricketot chirping. The moon and stars had illuminated the area enough for visibility as Syndra looked over the scene. The female was left wondering why that couldn't have happened before she got on stage but her focus turned to Cain when he spoke. "Kill time with what?" she ended up questioning. "If you have a plan then I'm up for almost anything." Why the almost was thrown in there might have been pretty self explanatory.
syndra immediately denies the half-hearted offer to sing karaoke again. if there's something that she wouldn't be swayed about, it's definitely this. seems like she doesn't really like singing or attention, although she's good at both. the syndra he saw up there is like another person compared to the syndra right now.
when they're left in the bleak darkness of the night cain finds himself a little excited. not at the prospect of no power, but something else. it's a little thrilling, actually. like they're in a movie and they had to figure out a way to save the day. or night, he guesses.
"i don't have a plan but we can think of one..." cain murmurs, looking around for a possible time waster. his eyes alight on the outlines of the lamps on the road. they line the sidewalk, their power still on despite the powerless karaoke stage. he nods to the weakly lit path next to the beach.
The suggestion for a walk wasn't a bad one. With the crowd dying down the atmosphere was nice enough for a brisk walk down the beach or down the dimly lit streets. Her eyes wandered into the distance as if to scout both areas to see if this was a viable choice and found nothing wrong. Either way Syndra received the suggestion fairly well with a nod of agreement. "A walk sounds like a good idea," she replied sweetly. Without warning the female reached over and grabbed Cain's hand so they wouldn't get separated before taking a few steps away from the remnants of the karaoke party. Perhaps this was rather forward but the girl didn't seem to notice this much. She was used to doing this action with her little brothers at night so they would not wander off and get lost. With what antics that the two of them had done on stage mere minutes ago Syndra did not think anything of the action.
As for what they should talk about during the walk that much was a mystery. She expected to be walking alongside the male rather than looking as if she was dragging him along. Her pace was relatively slow with that in mind, her eyes deviating to the specks of dim night life around them. Feeling the need to break the silence the girl tried to bring up a conversation, "so you haven't really told me much about yourself. What are you goals for your journey?" That was probably not a good question to ask a team aqua members but she didn't know that yet.
[attr=class, ashes]cain does feel a bit anxious at the answer, because syndra does look a little tired from everything. maybe he could offer to take her home? or wherever she stayed? he himself stays at the pokemon center, since it's usually free for trainers, or super cheap. he doesn't really have much money to spare. he can't afford the luxurious hotels that line the beach. he can't even afford a motel sometimes. which, in retrospect, didn't really matter. the pokemon center's sufficient enough.
he shakes himself of the thoughts, afraid that he missed what she said, but then she agrees to the idea. he sighs in relief and smiles. "awesome." he breathes. cain's just about to start walking until syndra suddenly makes a moves to grasp his hand. "s-syndra?" cain stutters. he's glad that it's night. the darkness hides the blush that blooms across his face. it's nice to hold hands but he never expected her to be this forward, but cain doesn't say anything else, because he finds that he doesn't really mind.
cain keeps up with her pace. it's quiet between them, but it's not exactly uncomfortable. questions swirl in his mind. syndra's a really nice person, but he doesn't really know much about her. and she probably doesn't know much about him, either.
"uh, just to see the sights. travel around and find some pokemon? i don't really have a set goal, i guess." he rambles, a bit nervous. cain can't really tell her that he's in aqua and does missions for money. but if he wasn't in aqua, he guesses that it's what he'd do. cain isn't really an ambitious person. he turns to her, because even if he didn't have goals, syndra sounded like someone who did.
